Position Summary

Position Summary: Works with patients to promote optimum mental and emotional health.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Develops comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and clinical impressions responsive to age-appropriate patients/families’ needs and concerns.
  2. Provides differential diagnosis of mental/emotional disorders using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
  3. Diagnoses biopsychosocial functioning, disability, and impairment for the age-appropriate patients/families.
  4. Develops treatment intervention plans with clinical impressions that are diagnostically driven and outcomes-focused with the patient/family and healthcare team.
  5. Builds effective working relationships with patients/families to engage, collaborate, advocate, and problem-solve to support and enhance their mental health strengths and functioning ability.
  6. Utilizes differential diagnostic skills and employs various clinical treatment interventions, including but not limited to crisis intervention, solution-focused therapy, psychotherapy (individual, couples, family, group), grief and bereavement counseling, play therapy, sand tray therapy, EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mental status exams.
  7. Initiates Baker Act procedures when necessary.
  8. Facilitates Marchman Act when appropriate.
  9. Supports psychosocial adjustment and transition to the next level of care.
  10. Provides mental health education, consultation, and professional support to the healthcare team regarding patient/family needs.
  11. Demonstrates initiative and leadership in developing mental health services responding to patient care demands.
  12. Identifies practice improvements based on continuous quality improvement.
  13. Maintains accurate, confidential records of mental health activities in patients’ medical charts.
  14. Meets department/hospital growth goals as set forth in coaching plans.
  15. Performs independently and provides clinical practice in healthcare settings.
  16. Supervises and participates in teaching within the department, hospital, and community.
  17. Holds subspecialty credentials (e.g., sexual abuse, EMDR, CAP, CBT) when appropriate.
  18. Coordinates care and related functions suitable for the patient population.
  19. Maintains regular, punctual attendance in accordance with policies and standards.
  20. Ensures compliance with all hospital policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions:

  1. Maintains and enhances knowledge of human development across all age groups through ongoing education.
  2. Pursues continuing education opportunities as per departmental policy.
  3. Participates in community activities to strengthen regional, state, or national health initiatives.
Qualifications

Education/Training: Master’s degree.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Maintains Alabama state licensure as one of the following:
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
    • Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC)
    • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    • Occupational Therapist (OT)
  • Handle with Care (HWC) Certification required for Behavioral Health Unit

Experience: Two (2) years of direct clinical experience, preferably in a health or mental health setting, with emphasis on the population served in the assigned area.
