Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mental Health Nurse to join our Mental Health team at HMP Preston, a category B prison located in Preston.

HMP Preston is a remand male prison for ages 18+ with a capacity of 680 inmates.

The mental health nurse will be based in the mental health inpatient unit within the healthcare department, with some expectations to work on the wing. The mental health team includes a clinical lead, 2 mental health nurses, and support workers.

This role is based on 37.5 hours per week, with shifts from Monday to Sunday, 7:30 am to 8:30 pm. You will work 2 out of 4 weekends per month, with schedules planned 6 weeks in advance.

The annual salary ranges from £33,232 to £40,211 depending on experience.

Main duties of the job
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, develop care plans, and review treatment options within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Undertake medication rounds, assess and treat patients, especially those who have experienced trauma or distress.
  • Assess health needs using evidence-based frameworks and perform risk assessments.
  • Provide advice, support, and manage a caseload of patients.
  • Monitor therapeutic responses and liaise with prescribers regarding medication effects.
  • Build strong links with partners and stakeholders, promote best practices, and support clinical supervision.
  • Share knowledge and skills to ensure safe, effective care within a collaborative team environment.
