We areseeking a dedicated Medicines Optimisation Technician to join our innovativepharmacy team. This is a non-patient facing roleyour primary focus will be onmedicines optimisation, supporting safe, effective, and value-based use ofmedicines across urgent primary care settings. Please note while this role iscurrently non-patient facing, this arrangement may be subject to review in thefuture depending on service needs.

You will workclosely with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist and multidisciplinary teams to shapeand deliver our medicines optimisation strategy, ensuring the highest standardsof patient care and safety.

Main duties of the job

Medicines Optimisation (core focus)

  • Champion medicines optimisation initiatives, supporting the development and implementation of strategies that promote safe, effective, and cost-efficient prescribing across all NEMS services.
  • Lead and support day-to-day medicines procurement and stock management, ensuring compliance with legal, professional, and financial policies
  • Document and demonstrate achievements in medicines expenditure containment, efficient procurement, and waste reduction.
  • Review and update medicines management policies and procedures to ensure safety and effectiveness and support the roll-out of new processes.
  • Facilitate medicine safety incident reviews, ensuring learning is shared and embedded throughout clinical teams.
  • Provide expert advice and support to colleagues on medicines optimisation best practice, guidelines, and daily implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with MHRA regulations, formulary requirements, and all relevant local and national guidance.
  • Oversee risk assessment and documentation for unlicensed medicines, and ensure all medicines are labelled and presented to the highest standards.
  • Act as a key liaison between pharmacy and clinical staff to ensure seamless medicines supply and promote a culture of medicines safety.

You will work closely with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist and multidisciplinary teams to shape and deliver our medicines optimisation strategy, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety.

MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB:

Medicines Optimisation (core focus)

Training & Development

  • Design and deliver medicines optimisation training to clinical and non-clinical staff, ensuring up-to-date knowledge and best practice are embedded across the organisation.
  • Support the induction and ongoing development of new and external staff in medicines optimisation duties.

Quality, Governance & Audit

  • Lead and support quality improvement projects directly linked to the medicines optimisation strategy and patient safety.
  • Conduct and support audits on medicines management, formulary adherence, antimicrobial stewardship, and controlled drug use.
  • Utilise quality improvement tools to drive continuous improvement and report outcomes to management.

Controlled Drugs & Compliance

  • Ensure robust procedures for controlled drugs, including regular audits, discrepancy investigations, and waste management.

Planning & Professionalism

  • Plan and review your own workload, demonstrate initiative, and ensure compliance with all governance, safety, and data protection standards.
  • Maintain professional registration with the GPhC and uphold the highest standards of professional conduct.
Person Specification
Additional
  • Driver with ability to travel between sites (Full clean driving licence)
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years post qualification experience working as a registered technician
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Experience in procurement of medicines.
  • Experienced in stock control, stock check, dispensing and managing stock waste.
  • Experience of working with Summary Care Records
  • Working in MDTs
  • Experience in delivering educational sessions/teaching.
  • Hospital or community pharmacy experience
  • Aware of electronic prescribing in primary care, retrieving prescription from NHS spine if needed.
  • Experience of submission of FP10s to NHSBSA.

Qualifications
