The FY2 Locally Employed Doctor post within the Emergency Department provides an excellent opportunity to develop clinical skills and experience in acute medicine and emergency care. The post-holder will be responsible for the assessment, investigation, and initial management of patients presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergency conditions. Working under the supervision of senior ED clinicians, the FY2 doctor will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective patient care within a fast-paced environment.
1. Clinical Assessment and Management
• Perform initial clinical assessments of patients presenting with urgent or emergency conditions.
• Take thorough histories, conduct physical examinations, and formulate working diagnoses.

Patient Care and Monitoring
• Monitor patient progress and respond to changes in clinical status.
• Recognise and escalate deteriorating patients promptly to senior colleagues.
• Ensure safe and effective handovers between shifts and multidisciplinary team members.
2. Documentation and Record-Keeping
• Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed clinical records in line with legal and organisational standards.
• Complete discharge summaries and referral letters as required.
3. Multidisciplinary Team Working
• Collaborate effectively with nurses, senior doctors, allied health professionals, and support staff to deliver coordinated care.
• Participate in team meetings, case discussions, and handovers.
4. Training and Professional Development
• Engage actively in departmental teaching sessions, clinical audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Reflect on clinical practice and undertake continuous professional development activities.
5. Compliance and Governance
• Adhere to local policies, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements including infection control and health & safety.
• Report incidents, near misses, and contribute to patient safety initiatives.
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
1. Clinical Duties
• Undertake comprehensive assessment and initial management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
• Take detailed medical histories and perform appropriate physical examinations.
• Formulate differential diagnoses and request relevant investigations (blood tests, ECGs, radiology).
• Initiate appropriate treatment plans including prescribing medications and interventions within level of competence and supervision.
• Reassess patients, monitor clinical progress, and modify management plans as necessary.
• Recognise signs of clinical deterioration and escalate to senior medical staff promptly.
• Facilitate safe and effective patient discharge, admission, or transfer as appropriate.
2. Documentation and Communication
• Maintain accurate, contemporaneous patient records in line with Trust and GMC standards.
• Complete discharge summaries, referral letters, and other documentation as required.
• Communicate clearly and empathetically with patients, families, and carers regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
• Collaborate and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated patient care.
3. Education, Training, and Development
• Participate actively in departmental teaching, training sessions, and clinical audits.
• Engage in reflective practice and continuing professional development to enhance clinical skills.
• Contribute to quality improvement projects within the Emergency Department.
4. Governance and Compliance
• Adhere to all Trust policies, clinical guidelines, and protocols including infection control, health and safety, and safeguarding.
• Participate in clinical governance activities, incident reporting, and risk management processes.
• Ensure compliance with the requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC) and other relevant professional bodies.
5. Teamwork and Professionalism
• Work collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary team to deliver patient-centred care.
• Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
