Medical Retina Specialty Doctor

Applications are invited a fixed term (12 month contract) full time Specialty Doctor in Medical Retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The exact job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate at the point of offer. The 8 clinical sessions will comprise of medical retina face to face clinics, intravitreal injection clinics, MR laser clinics, and MR virtual clinics (review of patient imaging remotely).

The Medical Retina Service at Moorfields St Georges is well established and highly specialist, treating all aspects of medical retina pathology and caring for many patients with diabetic retinopathy. The complex patient demographics and the challenging pathology at patient presentation requires consultant and senior ophthalmic specialist input for a significant amount of the clinical workload.

The service receives referrals from multiple sources, including A&E, primary care, internal referrals from other services within MEH, as well as external providersacross the South-East of England and beyond.

Main duties of the job

The full time job plan will consist of 8 clinical sessions with the provision for 2 administration sessions. The direct clinical sessions will comprise of medical retina face to face clinics, intravitreal injection clinics, MR laser clinics and MR virtual clinics (review of patient imaging remotely).

Job responsibilities

Research

Moorfields is an important research institution and each individual will be expected to contribute to research, teaching, and training within the Service. As a result the Trust has a policy conveying intellectual property, which may apply to you.

Study and Training

Study leave is granted prospectively by the Study Leave Sub-Committee, following Consultant approval and is subject to agreement by the Clinical Management Board. A minimum of 10 weeks notice is required to permit adjustment of planned clinical work.

The Clinical Tutorial Complex, with well-equipped Seminar Rooms and a large modern lecture theatre, provides the principal location for courses and lectures organised by the Post Graduate Medical Education Centre. There is also a skill laboratory, which provides microscopes and other equipment for surgical training.

Entitlement is in line withAnnual Leave policy and within the rules defined by the local service. A minimum of 8 weeks notice is required for annual leave to permit adjustments of planned clinical work.

Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
  • FULL GMC Registration OR eligible for Full Registration with the GMC with License to Practise at time of appointment.
  • FRCOphth/MRCOphth OR equivalent.
Further Training & Knowledge
  • Completion of medical retina fellowship.
  • Competent and understands MR digital asynchronous clinics OR Competent in delivering PDT treatment.
  • Experience in managing and organising high volume MR digital clinics OR Experience in coordinating PDT clinics.
Skills & Ability
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Competent in performing cataract surgery and completed 250 independent cases.
  • Competent in performing cataract surgery independently (completed 500 independent cases).
Experience
  • 4 Years full-time postgraduate training at least two of which must be in the Ophthalmology Specialty Training Programme or have equivalent experience & competencies. (or its equivalent gained on a part-time flexible basis).
  • Experience in the assessment and management of patients with Medical Retinal conditions and competent in making clinical decisions & managing risk.
  • Experience in & participation in departmental audit.
  • Created new pathways/ clinics either relating to MR Digital clinics or AMD treatments.
