Medical Registrar for acute medicine (with specialist interest)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior trainee (ST4 or above or equivalent) with a special interest in another specialty to join St Mary's hospital as a medical registrar.

The medical chief registrar will be attached to the Division of Medicine and Integrated Care (MIC), which operates Trust-wide, and the acute medicine team at St Mary's Hospital - contributing to the medical take, care of medical inpatients and same day emergency care (SDEC).

The Medical registrar will spend 60% of their time in acute medicine and 40% of their time in another specialty which is most likely to be rheumatology.

The duration of the post is 1 year initially, with the possibility of extending.

Main duties of the job

This post is 60% clinical within the department of Acute Medicine at St Mary's and 40% within another specialty, which is most likely to be rheumatology.

The post holder will also be on the GIM on call rota, which includes a mixture of long days, weekends and nights.

The post holder should be able to start the job as soon as possible.

Job responsibilities

The role is based at St Marys Hospital where candidates will look after acute medical inpatients and take part in the acute medical on-call rota. They will work with a team of resident doctors and wider multidisciplinary team, under the supervision of consultant physicians. There will be opportunities for additional experience/training in Same Day Emergency Care and/or specialty clinics (rheumatology). There is a weekly Acute Medicine Teaching Programme as well. There is also a monthly Local Faculty Group (LFG) meeting and weekly hospital Grand Rounds during academic term times.

The post holder will be expected to maintain a learning portfolio reflecting upon their progress through the year. The portfolio will inform regular tutorials with the consultant.

Hot-desk space and computer access is provided, with access to the Internet, PubMed and medical journals via Imperial College London library services. NB: No study leave funding is attached, but a bursary may be available to assist with postgraduate study

Education and Qualifications
  • On GMC Register with license to practice
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Additional relevant degree (intercalated, masters or doctorate)
Relevant experience in specialty/Sub specialty
  • Should be ST4 or above
  • Should not already hold a CCT or be within 12 months (ideally not within 18 months) of completion of training on intended start date
  • Must have approval of TPD to apply
  • Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes
Clinical Skills
  • Competent in basic clinical procedures
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately
Academic achievements including research/publications
  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to level of appointment at ICHNT
Leadership and Management
  • Evidence of effective team-working and leadership
  • Evidence of involvement in local management systems
  • Evidence of effective leadership (e.g. evidence of leading innovations or improvements)
  • Understanding of the local and national context of the NHS, including economic and political influences

  • Are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
