Job description

We are looking for a friendly and efficient receptionist to join our busy GP surgery team. As the first point of contact for our patients, you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, managing appointments, and maintaining patient records. We are seeking a part-time receptionist to work 3 days a week: Monday from 8am to 1.15pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 1.15pm to 6.30pm.

Job Summary:
  • Receive, assist, and direct patients to the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Provide general assistance to the Practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and visitors, either in person or via telephone.
Main duties of the job

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure an effective and efficient reception service for patients and visitors.
  • Handle general enquiries, explain procedures, and book appointments.
  • Use judgment to see urgent patients without prior appointments according to practice protocols.
  • Explain practice arrangements to new and temporary patients, ensuring procedures are completed.
  • Distribute signed prescriptions, verifying patient details.
  • Provide forms or letters, collect payments, and pass them to the Practice Manager, logging details accordingly. Issue receipts upon request.
  • Send hospital samples in the correct colour-coded bags for courier collection.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy reception area.
  • Identify patients using date of birth and NHS number in addition to their name.
  • Manage tasks and notifications as requested.
  • Address patient queries or escalate to appropriate staff.
  • Provide holiday cover for absent staff.
  • Support triage by gathering initial patient information, signposting, and escalating to clinical staff as needed.
