Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, school staff, parents and external healthcare professionals, you will help ensure that pupils receive appropriate care throughout the school day. You will be responsible for managing the school's medical provision, maintaining accurate health records and supporting pupils with medical conditions, injuries and other health-related needs.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, sound judgement, discretion and a compassionate approach when dealing with children and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide first aid and immediate care to pupils and staff who become unwell or sustain injuries during the school day.

  • Assess medical concerns, respond appropriately to emergencies and arrange further medical assistance when required.

  • Manage the school's medical room and ensure first-aid supplies and medical equipment are adequately stocked and maintained.

  • Maintain accurate, confidential medical records, accident reports, incident logs and relevant health documentation.

  • Liaise with parents and carers regarding pupils' illnesses, injuries, medical needs and any follow-up care required.

  • Support the management of pupils with allergies, asthma, diabetes and other medical conditions in accordance with individual healthcare plans and school procedures.

  • Administer medication in line with parental consent, prescribed instructions, school policies and relevant guidance.

  • Monitor and maintain individual healthcare plans, ensuring relevant staff are informed of pupils' medical needs where appropriate.

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, the designated safeguarding lead and senior leaders to support pupil welfare.

  • Promote good health, hygiene and wellbeing throughout the school community.

  • Support the school's health and safety procedures, including the recording and monitoring of accidents and medical incidents.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive medical information in accordance with GDPR and safeguarding requirements.

  • Assist with health-related arrangements for school trips, educational visits, sports activities and other school events.

  • Contribute to the review and implementation of medical, first-aid and health-related policies and procedures.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Relevant first-aid, healthcare or medical training, appropriate to the responsibilities of the role.

  • A current paediatric first-aid or equivalent relevant first-aid qualification, or a willingness to undertake the required training.

  • Experience providing first aid, healthcare support or medical assistance, ideally within a school or child-focused environment.

  • The ability to remain calm, professional and decisive when dealing with medical incidents and emergencies.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with pupils, parents, staff and healthcare professionals.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records and manage competing priorities.

  • A caring, patient and approachable manner, with a genuine commitment to children's health and wellbeing.

  • An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety and the importance of following school policies.

  • The ability to recognise when a pupil requires further medical assessment and escalation concerns appropriately.

  • Good IT and administrative skills, including the ability to maintain electronic and paper-based records.

Previous experience working as a School Medical Officer, School Nurse, First Aider, Healthcare Assistant or in a similar medical support role would be advantageous.

Personal Qualities

We are looking for someone who is compassionate, dependable and attentive to detail, with a professional approach to managing sensitive situations. You will be confident working independently while recognising the importance of teamwork and clear communication.

You should be able to build positive relationships with pupils of different ages, reassure children who are anxious or distressed and respond sensitively to individual health needs. Discretion, sound judgement and a proactive approach to maintaining a safe school environment are essential.

Safeguarding and Recruitment

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold these values and follow the school's safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Appointment will be subject to appropriate pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references, right-to-work verification and verification of relevant qualifications and professional registrations, where applicable.
