Virginia Oncology Associates, the largest group of medical professionals in Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina devoted exclusively to cancer care and blood disorders, has an exciting opportunity for a MLS/MLT/MT to support our office in Norfolk.

Responsibilities
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance. Send specimens to reference labs for tests not performed in-house. Process incoming lab testing orders, including reference laboratory specimens.
- Assist with special procedures as needed (e.g., bone marrow procedures).
- Perform analysis of Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens.
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, conducting routine maintenance as scheduled.
- Adhere to quality control policies, document all QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance, and record lot numbers of controls and reagents.
- Participate in proficiency testing annually by analyzing samples and reporting results.
- Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform WBC differential.
- Examine urinary sediment microscopically, record results, and process specimens for send-out testing.
- Follow policies when test systems deviate from performance standards, identify problems, correct or notify supervisor, and document corrective actions.
- Maintain documentation per quality assurance, including logs and records, and verify critical results with proper follow-up.
- Manage supplies inventory, prepare reagents, and restock as needed.
- Process and chart in-house and incoming results accurately and timely.
- Identify and band patients for blood transfusions, process labeled specimens per blood bank policy.
- Assist with phlebotomy and specimen collection, ensuring pre-authorization and consent forms are completed.
- Follow OSHA and universal precautions, comply with regulatory standards, and maintain patient and staff confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in medical technology or laboratory science required for MLT.
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology or laboratory science required for MT (MLS).
- Minimum three years of relevant experience preferred.
- Willingness to travel between sites is required.
- Current state license if applicable.
- Certification through AMT, ASCP, or equivalent preferred.
