Medical Laboratory Assistant (Specimen Reception)
KEY DUTIES
Technical duties may vary slightly from site to site and may not be applicable on all sites.
- Receive and barcode all samples and request forms as appropriate.
- Enter patient and sample details into the Laboratory Information System accurately.
- Data entry of all patient identifiable information, clinical details, and request details for all disciplines, except Blood Transfusion, into the Pathology (Telepath) system.
- Sort and deliver bar-coded samples/requests to the appropriate department promptly.
- Receive requests into Telepath via the order communication systems.
- Process samples through pre-analytical stages such as centrifugation, aliquoting, clot removal, and loading onto analyzers.
- Number, Telepath entry, and load Blood Cultures onto the analyzer in Microbiology.
- Handle telephone inquiries as required.
- Prioritize urgent samples for fast tracking.
- Process add-on requests.
- Use the Patient Administration System and other systems to verify patient details.
- Perform manual patient merges in LIMS for Haematology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, and notify Blood Transfusion of mismatches.
- Respond to faults in the Pneumatic Air Tube system and report ongoing faults.
- Respond to telephone inquiries from service users, patients, relatives, and colleagues, and give out authorized results from Telepath.
- Use fax, photocopier, and manage stock storage and rotation.
- Distribute GP orders and reports timely via internal and external systems.
- Accurately file and retrieve reports, and scan request forms.
- Work closely with all departments to ensure timely, accurate service delivery.
- Provide cross-cover for colleagues as needed.
- Night staff in Microbiology process Blood Cultures to loading stage.
- Maintain workflow management, including timely data entry and sample collection.
- Maintain good working relations and promote teamwork.
- Participate in departmental meetings and report risks or issues promptly.
- Replenish blood bottles and prepare dispatch orders.
- Greet visitors as necessary and help cover holiday/sickness absences.
- Advise on stock levels and take action accordingly.
- Ensure work areas are tidy and follow SOPs for decontamination.
- Adhere to Health & Safety protocols, COSHH legislation, and report incidents or defects.
- Communicate effectively within the department and participate in meetings.
