Medical Laboratory Assistant (Specimen Reception)

KEY DUTIES

Technical duties may vary slightly from site to site and may not be applicable on all sites.

  1. Receive and barcode all samples and request forms as appropriate.
  2. Enter patient and sample details into the Laboratory Information System accurately.
  3. Data entry of all patient identifiable information, clinical details, and request details for all disciplines, except Blood Transfusion, into the Pathology (Telepath) system.
  4. Sort and deliver bar-coded samples/requests to the appropriate department promptly.
  5. Receive requests into Telepath via the order communication systems.
  6. Process samples through pre-analytical stages such as centrifugation, aliquoting, clot removal, and loading onto analyzers.
  7. Number, Telepath entry, and load Blood Cultures onto the analyzer in Microbiology.
  8. Handle telephone inquiries as required.
  9. Prioritize urgent samples for fast tracking.
  10. Process add-on requests.
  11. Use the Patient Administration System and other systems to verify patient details.
  12. Perform manual patient merges in LIMS for Haematology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, and notify Blood Transfusion of mismatches.
  13. Respond to faults in the Pneumatic Air Tube system and report ongoing faults.
  14. Respond to telephone inquiries from service users, patients, relatives, and colleagues, and give out authorized results from Telepath.
  15. Use fax, photocopier, and manage stock storage and rotation.
  16. Distribute GP orders and reports timely via internal and external systems.
  17. Accurately file and retrieve reports, and scan request forms.
  18. Work closely with all departments to ensure timely, accurate service delivery.
  19. Provide cross-cover for colleagues as needed.
  20. Night staff in Microbiology process Blood Cultures to loading stage.
  21. Maintain workflow management, including timely data entry and sample collection.
  22. Maintain good working relations and promote teamwork.
  23. Participate in departmental meetings and report risks or issues promptly.
  24. Replenish blood bottles and prepare dispatch orders.
  25. Greet visitors as necessary and help cover holiday/sickness absences.
  26. Advise on stock levels and take action accordingly.
  27. Ensure work areas are tidy and follow SOPs for decontamination.
  28. Adhere to Health & Safety protocols, COSHH legislation, and report incidents or defects.
  29. Communicate effectively within the department and participate in meetings.

Additional notes: Any other duties necessary for departmental smooth operation may be assigned.
