Job summary

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant in its Microbiology laboratory to support SHYPS pathology networks across the Trust and wider region.

You will assist with specimen preparation, booking into the Winpath LIMS, handling queries, and general admin while working within UKAS standards and a rota that may include late, weekend and bank holidays.

Qualifications

• Experience working as part of a team.
• Good practical skills and manual dexterity.
• Basic computer and keyboard skills required.

Responsibilities

• Receive and book samples into the LIMS (Winpath).
• Prepare clinical and referral samples for testing.
• Support biomedical scientists with diagnostic testing.
• Answer phone queries from healthcare staff and public with confidentiality.
• Carry out data entry, reception and admin duties.
• Sort specimens and forms, flag anomalies.
• Handle blood, urine and other samples safely.
• Store samples and reagents appropriately.
• Follow standard operating procedures and UKAS standards.
• Use laboratory computer systems for data input and recall.
• Carry out housekeeping and record-keeping.
• Attend meetings and mandatory training; work well with colleagues.

Job description

Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Microbiology laboratory at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals, supporting the SHYPS pathology network across the Trust and wider region. The work supports biomedical scientists, covering specimen preparation, booking samples into the Winpath LIMS, answering laboratory phone queries and general admin. The laboratory is UKAS accredited, and late, weekend and bank holiday rota work will become a contractual requirement over time.

• Handle blood, urine and other clinical samples safely
• Store samples and reagents appropriately
• Work strictly to standard operating procedures and UKAS standards
• Use laboratory computer systems for data input and recall
• Carry out housekeeping: cleaning, disinfecting and record-keeping
• Attend meetings and mandatory training, and work well with colleagues
