Position Summary

Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) II evaluates, assists in interpreting results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using automated and manual methods to ensure high-quality laboratory results within established timeframes.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Evaluate specimens for quality and pre-analytical errors.
  • Verify results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Work with general guidance on moderately complex procedures.
  • Understand how different laboratory areas are related.
  • Work semi-autonomously to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Verify instrument performance standards, including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with computer systems for ordering, result entry, and inquiries.
  • Ensure proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
  • Assist with inventory management.
  • Communicate critical results to patient caregivers.
  • Evaluate the accuracy of results considering all testing phases (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical).
  • Report work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work during shift changes.
  • Respond to technical inquiries related to work.
  • Assist in training new team members and students.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance following hospital policies and regulations.
  • Comply with all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Perform specimen collection, receiving, and processing as required.
  • Greet guests and answer department phone calls.
  • Maintain current knowledge to effectively instruct students and personnel.
  • Follow policies to meet regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Practice infection control and safety protocols; keep work area organized and clean.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information at all times.
Qualifications

Education/Training: Bachelor’s degree required. An associate’s degree with two years of relevant experience or completion of an approved clinical internship may substitute for the bachelor’s degree.

Licensure/Certification: Maintain current licensure as a Medical Technologist in Alabama, certified in the required specialties. National certifications such as ASCP, AAB, or AMT are preferred.

Experience: Minimum of one year of relevant experience. Department-specific competencies may be required based on the area of assignment.
