Qualifications

  • Completed e-learning Medical Examiner Officer core training modules prior to commencing in post.
  • Completed face-to-face Medical Examiner Officer training modules within 3 months of commencing in post.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and the Coroner & Justice Act 2009.

Job Overview

Medical Examiner Officers will join a cross-site team between Royal Liverpool and Aintree sites to support the Medical Examiner service. The role combines clinical knowledge, sensitive communication and IT skills to manage evidence and key performance indicators.

Main Responsibilities
  • Act as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians to resolve concerns related to a patient’s death.
  • Work with medical examiners to oversee the death certification process for all deceased patients.
  • Perform preliminary reviews of medical records to establish the circumstances of individual patient deaths.
  • Refer patients to HM Coroner for further investigation when approved by the Medical Examiner.
  • Maintain awareness of equality and diversity considerations for all users of the Medical Examiner system.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent practical experience in a related field.
  • Completed e‑learning Medical Examiner Officer core training modules prior to commencing in post.
  • Completed face‑to‑face Medical Examiner Officer training modules within 3 months of commencing in post.
  • Experience of working with people in sensitive and emotional situations.
  • Understanding of medical terminology, the Coroner & Justice Act 2009 and the operational remit of the Medical Examiner system.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in a highly pressured environment.
  • Good IT skills and the ability to handle personally identifiable data securely.
