A leading healthcare group is seeking a Medical Examiner to ensure compliance with death certification regulations and support the training of junior doctors. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders, transparent communication with families, and participation in mortality reviews. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team contributing to high-quality patient care.
The post-holder will provide a minimum of 1PA per week as part of a team of Medical Examiners with a pro-rata contribution to the out of hours rota (Saturday, Sunday & UK bank holidays). They will be based in the mortuary/bereavement offices at LUHFT (Aintree or Royal).
The post-holder will work closely with medical examiner officers and bereavement staff in the acute sector, as well as their equivalents in the community and other organisations.
Given the impact of the Regulations on the network, MEs may need to provide sessions at more than one site. Routine scrutiny is available as a 5-day service, with a weekend service for urgent certification & release requests for religious reasons.
The post holder must be registered with a license to practice in the UK by the GMC. As a pre-condition, an ME must have completed the mandatory components of the national online medical examiner curriculum, with face-to-face training completed within the first three months of employment.
Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements related to current processes of death certification, coroner investigations, and death registration.
Scrutinise causes of death certified by attending doctors.
Discuss and explain causes of death with next of kin/informants in a transparent, tactful, and sympathetic manner.
Treat all users with respect and without discrimination.
Maintain comprehensive records of scrutinised deaths and undertake analysis to provide information to the National Medical Examiner’s office.
Participate in clinical governance activities related to death certification, including audits, mortality reviews, and investigations of complaints about patient care.
Support training of junior doctors on death certification and promote best practices in completing MCCDs accurately.
Collaborate effectively with other MEs, MEOs, and external stakeholders.
