Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director

Service & location: Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson - Male Medium Secure Unit

Professionally Accountable to: Regional Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Medical Director & Consultant Psychiatrist to work at Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson, providing senior medical cover on Columbus ward, our 13-bed Male Medium Secure Unit.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients, and will be responsible for auditing medical services to ensure quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines.

In addition to being the Responsible Clinician, you will serve as the Medical Director at Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson.

Cygnet Bury Hudson is a 78-bed hospital offering a range of secure mental health services for men, including those with personality disorder diagnoses.

This role is based on Columbus ward, a medium secure unit providing care for men with enduring mental health needs and co-morbidities, in a calm, therapeutic environment emphasizing service user experience, shared care, and safety.

This is a full-time position with 0.2 WTE as Medical Director and 0.8 WTE as Consultant Psychiatrist.

Your expertise will be central to delivering impactful treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

Main duties and Responsibilities

As a Medical Director, you will:

  • Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for our patients
  • Lead clinical practice and exemplify operational excellence
  • Provide leadership and monitor performance of medical staff
  • Supervise all consultants and ensure they supervise SDs and ASs
  • Offer expert support within the service and to the wider team
  • Maintain quality and compliance with standards and regulations
  • Collaborate to provide integrated, holistic care
  • Coach, mentor, and train colleagues
  • Facilitate communication and meetings with medical staff
  • Assist in recruiting and retaining high-quality medical staff
  • Involve medical staff in hospital clinical governance
  • Work with hospital managers on CQC outcomes
  • Chair medical advisory committee meetings and attend regional Medical Directors meetings
  • Liaise with Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding fitness to practice concerns

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Lead the provision of high-quality care on Columbus ward
  • Model positive attitudes towards patients and staff
  • Take responsibility for patient treatment plans with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations
  • Perform investigations, diagnoses, and treatments
  • Conduct ward rounds, reviews, and audits
  • Implement risk assessments and embed clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings
  • Coordinate with the Ministry of Justice for patient transfers and leave approvals
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Communicate regularly with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
