Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director
Service & Location: Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson - Male Medium Secure Personality Disorder Unit
Professionally Accountable to: Regional Medical Director
Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Medical Director & Consultant Psychiatrist to work at Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson, providing senior medical cover on Columbus ward, our 13-bed Male Medium Secure Personality Disorder Unit. The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients as required, and will also be responsible for auditing the medical services to ensure their quality in accordance with GMC standards and other relevant guidelines.

The role also includes being the Medical Director at Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson. The hospital provides a wide range of secure mental health services for men, including those with personality disorders. The position is based on Columbus ward, a medium secure unit delivering care for men with personality disorders and enduring mental health needs in a calm, therapeutic environment focused on service user experience, shared care, and safety.

This is a full-time position with 0.2 WTE as Medical Director and 0.8 WTE as Consultant Psychiatrist. Your expertise will drive life-changing treatments, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists. Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for patients
  • Lead all aspects of clinical practice and exemplify operational excellence
  • Provide leadership for medical staff on professional and managerial issues and monitor performance
  • Supervise all consultants and ensure supervision of SDs and ASs
  • Provide expert knowledge and support within the service and to the wider team
  • Ensure quality and compliance with standards and regulations
  • Collaborate with colleagues for integrated, whole-person treatment and care
  • Coach, mentor, and train colleagues
  • Maintain regular communication and meetings with medical staff
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of medical staff
  • Participate in hospital clinical governance
  • Lead on implementing CQC outcomes and chair medical advisory meetings
  • Liaise with Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding fitness to practice issues

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, your responsibilities include:

  • Leading high-quality care on Columbus ward
  • Serving as a positive role model
  • Taking responsibility for patient treatment plans with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assessing referrals and conducting mental state examinations
  • Undertaking investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Conducting ward rounds, patient reviews, and audits
  • Leading risk assessments and embedding clinical governance
  • Supervising reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attending hearings
  • Coordinating with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave
  • Maintaining accurate patient records
  • Ensuring effective communication with site management
