Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director

Service & Location: Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson - Male Medium Secure Personality Disorder Unit

Professionally Accountable to: Regional Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Medical Director & Consultant Psychiatrist to work at Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson, providing senior medical cover on Columbus ward, our 13-bed Male Medium Secure Personality Disorder Unit.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing the care of all ward inpatients as required, and will have responsibility for auditing medical services to ensure they meet GMC standards and other relevant guidelines.

In addition to being the Responsible Clinician, you will serve as the Medical Director at Cygnet Hospital Bury Hudson.

Cygnet Bury Hudson is a 78-bed hospital offering a range of secure mental health services for men, including those with personality disorders.

This role is based on Columbus ward, a medium secure unit providing care for men with personality disorders and enduring mental health needs in a therapeutic environment focused on service user experience, shared care, and safety.

This is a full-time position with 0.2 WTE as Medical Director and 0.8 WTE as Consultant Psychiatrist.

Your expertise will be central to delivering life-changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a Medical Director, you will:

  • Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for patients
  • Lead clinical practice and exemplify operational excellence
  • Provide leadership and monitor performance of medical staff
  • Supervise consultants and ensure supervision of Specialty Doctors and Associate Specialists
  • Offer expert knowledge and support within the service and to the wider team
  • Ensure quality and compliance with standards and regulations
  • Work with colleagues to deliver integrated, whole-person care
  • Coach, mentor, and train colleagues
  • Maintain regular communication and meetings with medical staff
  • Assist in recruiting and retaining medical staff
  • Involve medical staff in hospital clinical governance
  • Collaborate with hospital managers to implement CQC outcomes
  • Chair medical advisory meetings and attend Medical Directors meetings
  • Liaise with the Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding fitness to practice issues

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Lead the provision of high-quality care on Columbus ward
  • Act as a positive role model for patients, families, visitors, and staff
  • Take responsibility for patient treatment plans with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations
  • Undertake investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, reviews, and audits
  • Lead risk assessments, risk management, and clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings
  • Coordinate with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Ensure effective communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
