Job summary

Skylight Psychiatry is seeking an experienced Consultant to join as Medical Director, reporting to the Clinical Team Lead. The role provides strategic clinical leadership across the organisation, guiding governance, service development and multidisciplinary collaboration while maintaining clinical practice.

The Medical Director will lead on clinical quality, safety, and patient outcomes, support innovation, and represent Skylight Psychiatry with external partners.

Qualifications

  • GMC-registered Consultant Psychiatrist with current licence to practise.
  • Significant experience in ADHD, autism and wider neurodevelopmental services.
  • Senior clinical leadership experience at consultant level.
  • Experience contributing to service development and improvement.

Skylight Psychiatry is seeking an experienced Consultant to join the organisation as Medical Director. Reporting to the Clinical Team Lead, this senior leadership position offers the opportunity to shape the clinical strategy of a growing specialist mental health provider. Working as a key member of the Senior Management Team, the successful candidate will lead clinical quality and governance, support service development and innovation, provide expert clinical leadership across multidisciplinary teams, and help ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred neurodevelopmental services., The Medical Director is the senior medical and clinical leader at Skylight Psychiatry, responsible for providing strategic clinical leadership across the organisation. Key duties include overseeing clinical governance, quality, safety and risk management; developing and improving clinical services and pathways; supporting and developing clinical leaders and multidisciplinary teams; ensuring compliance with CQC and professional standards; contributing to organisational strategy and decision-making; and representing Skylight Psychiatry with external stakeholders. The postholder also maintains a clinical practice alongside their leadership responsibilities., The Medical Director is Skylight Psychiatry's senior medical and clinical leader at organisational level. The postholder will be an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist. Working as a key member of the Senior Management Team, the Medical Director will provide strategic clinical leadership across Skylight's services, ensuring that clinical quality, safety and patient outcomes remain central to organisational decision-making and service development. The role will provide senior clinical input into clinical governance, quality and risk, service development and clinical strategy, while supporting and developing clinical leaders across the organisation., Strategic Medical & Clinical Leadership

Strategic Medical & Clinical Leadership
  • Act as the senior clinical leader across Skylight Psychiatry.
  • Provide strategic clinical advice to the Managing Director, Senior Management Team and Board as required.
  • Play an active role within the Senior Management Team, contributing to organisational strategy, priorities and decision-making.
  • Develop and oversee Skylight's clinical strategy in line with organisational growth and service development.
  • Provide senior clinical oversight and escalation where complex or significant clinical issues arise.
  • Ensure clear and effective clinical leadership arrangements exist across individual services and pathways.
  • Support, challenge and develop clinical leads, promoting appropriate clinical accountability and distributed leadership.
  • Promote a culture in which high-quality, safe and evidence-based care is embedded throughout the organisation.
Clinical Governance, Quality & Safety
  • Provide senior clinical leadership within Skylight's clinical governance arrangements and contribute actively to Clinical Governance meetings.
  • Ensure effective clinical governance standards and systems operate across all services.
  • Provide senior oversight of medical governance and professional standards across the organisation, ensuring appropriate arrangements for medical practice, accountability and escalation.
  • Provide senior clinical input into organisational risk management, safeguarding, incidents, complaints and learning.
  • Lead and contribute to clinical audit, quality assurance and outcome measurement.
  • Ensure learning from audit, incidents, complaints, patient experience and other quality information translates into improvements in clinical practice.
  • Support organisational readiness for CQC inspection and ensure services operate in accordance with relevant regulatory and professional standards.
  • Promote continuous improvement, reflective practice and organisational learning.
Clinical Services & Pathway Development
  • Provide senior clinical oversight of Skylight's existing clinical pathways.
  • Lead the clinical development of new services and pathways as the organisation expands.
  • Ensure clinical models, pathways and protocols are evidence-based, safe, effective and appropriate for the populations served.
  • Work collaboratively with operational, quality, commissioning and other leaders to ensure clinical and operational models are aligned.
  • Provide senior clinical input into tenders, commissioning opportunities and service mobilisation where required.
  • Support innovation and appropriate use of technology and digital approaches within clinical care.
Medical & Multidisciplinary Leadership
  • Provide senior medical leadership across the organisation.
  • Work closely with Consultant Psychiatrists and other senior clinicians, ensuring appropriate medical and multidisciplinary leadership within individual services.
  • Support effective multidisciplinary working and appropriate clinical decision-making structures.
  • Provide senior advice and escalation for complex clinical matters where required.
  • Contribute to the recruitment, development and retention of high-quality medical and clinical professionals.
  • Support appropriate clinical supervision, appraisal, professional development and clinical leadership development across the organisation.
External & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Represent Skylight Psychiatry professionally with commissioners, ICBs, regulators and other external stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Develop constructive senior clinical relationships with key partners.
  • Represent Skylight at relevant professional meetings, forums and events.
  • Contribute to Skylight's reputation as a high-quality provider of neurodevelopmental services.
Clinical Practice
  • Maintain an appropriate clinical practice alongside Medical Director responsibilities, as agreed within the job plan.
  • Provide expert clinical input in areas aligned with experience and service requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate professional registration, revalidation and continuing professional development.
  • Model high standards of clinical practice and professional behaviour.
    GMC-registered Consultant Psychiatrist with a current licence to practise and inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry.
  • Significant experience within ADHD, autism and/or wider neurodevelopmental services.
  • Significant experience working at Consultant Psychiatrist level.
  • Demonstrable senior clinical leadership experience.
  • Strong experience of clinical governance, quality and patient safety.
  • Experience of contributing to service development and improvement.
  • Ability to provide credible senior clinical leadership across multidisciplinary services and professional groups.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding, clinical risk, audit and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to operate effectively at senior organisational level and contribute to strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to balance clinical quality, patient experience, operational requirements and organisational priorities.
  • Commitment to high-quality, evidence-based and patient-centred care.
  • Current approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Desirable
  • Previous Medical Director, Clinical Director, Associate Medical Director or equivalent senior medical leadership experience.
  • Experience within CQC-regulated independent healthcare.
  • Experience working with NHS commissioners and/or ICBs.
  • Experience developing or mobilising new clinical services and pathways.
  • Experience supporting organisational growth and change.
  • Additional qualifications or formal development in medical leadership, management, quality improvement or service development.
