Job summary

J C Bamford Excavators Ltd (JCB) invites applications for a Mechatronics Apprenticeship starting September 2027 for a 44-month programme. You’ll split time between block-release training and work-based learning at JCB, with placements across a dedicated business unit.

For the first two years you’ll develop skills in mechanical and electrical engineering, then work full-time at JCB to gain on-the-job experience, finishing with a final workplace assessment.

Qualifications

• GCSEs including Maths, English and a relevant science/technical subject at C/4 or above.
• Emerging Talent schemes do not offer visa sponsorship.
• Mechatronics blends mechanical and electrical engineering with hands-on training.
• Two years of block-release training and work placements, then full-time at JCB.
• Final assessment in the workplace to complete the apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

• Undertake block-release training and work-based learning with placement periods.
• Be based full-time at JCB in a business area during the latter part.
• Complete final practical assessment to finish the apprenticeship.
• Participate in in-person Assessment Centres if progressed.

Starting Salary - £16,000

Minimum Entry Criteria - You'll need at least four GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths, English and a relevant scientific/technical subject at C/4 or above.

What does the Mechatronics Apprenticeship scheme involve day to day?

Mechatronics is where mechanical engineering meets electrical engineering. It's robotics, electronics, product engineering and more. It's fixing the machines that we need to make our machines. Without you, the machines won't just grind to a halt, they will stay that way.

For the first two years of the apprenticeship, you'll undertake a combination of block release training with our dedicated training provider and work-based learning at JCB, alongside several placement periods within a dedicated business unit.

For the remaining time of the programme, you'll be based full-time at JCB, gaining valuable on-the-job experience in one of our business areas. You'll then complete your apprenticeship through a final practical assessment in the workplace, demonstrating the skills and knowledge you have developed throughout the programme.

What comes next?

1. We'll be reviewing applications against the essential criteria then shortlisting and sending out links to our online assessments in November 2026 - January 2027 (we'd recommend you keep a look out for emails at this point as you'll hear from us either way).
2. Once you've fully completed your online assessment, we'll review it and provide you with an update within a few weeks. Please note, if you've not completed your online assessment then we won't take your application further (we'll send you a few reminders to make sure you don't forget). If you've been progressed, you'll be sent an invite to attend one of our in-person Assessment Centres.
3. In-person Assessment Centres will take place from January to April 2027 (we'll send you all the details you need).
4. Following your Assessment Centre, whether you've been successful or not, our promise to you is that you'll receive a call with feedback.
5. If successful, congratulations! We'll now take you through the onboarding process, which will include a familiarisation day.
6. Welcome to JCB - our Emerging Talent cohorts ordinarily start in early September
