The Role The School of Engineering at Newcastle University is seeking to appoint an individual to the role of Mechanical Technician. This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of technical staff supporting teaching activities, primarily within our multifunction laboratories and project areas. You will play a key role in ensuring multifunction laboratories are safe, well-maintained, and equipped to deliver high-quality practical sessions and student projects. Our highly skilled and professional technical colleagues are essential in supporting and delivering successful teaching activities to an international standard. The School of Engineering employs approximately 75 technicians working across campus and off-site facilities throughout the Northeast of England. Our technical expertise spans a wide range of disciplines and makes a fundamental contribution to Newcastle University's impact on the world. You will be part of a collaborative technical team providing support to academic staff and students during taught practical sessions and projects.

Responsibilities
  • Maintaining and operating machinery and equipment
  • Delivering safety inductions
  • Providing training on specialist tools and techniques
  • Managing resources and stock levels
  • Support the technical team leader and senior technicians in maintaining health and safety compliance, infrastructure, and asset management within designated teaching and project spaces
Skills you will need to demonstrate
  • A proven track record of working in a manufacturing or engineering environment, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A proactive mindset with evidence of continuous improvement
  • Technical problem-solving skills and a solution-focused approach
  • A strong customer focus and the ability to work flexibly, efficiently, and cooperatively with stakeholders
  • A good understanding of health and safety processes
  • Technical expertise in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment
Qualifications
  • Essential National Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering (or Equivalent Level 3 Qualification) or relevant technical experience acquired through a combination of vocational training and on the job experience
  • Desirable Full UK driving license
