Job summary

Viridor Limited in Exeter seeks a hands-on Mechanical Technician to maximise plant reliability. You will perform planned and reactive maintenance, diagnose faults, and support maintenance planning while upholding health, safety and environmental standards.

Experience in heavy industrial environments, CMMS familiarity, and ability to work within Permit to Work and Safe Systems of Work, plus a collaborative, proactive approach, are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Experience carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Strong track record of delivering maintenance safely, efficiently and within environmental/operational requirements.
  • Knowledge of mechanical repair methods and equipment used in heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience working within Permit to Work and Safe System of Work processes.
  • Familiarity with CMMS and preventative maintenance programmes.
  • Experience creating scopes of work or engineering specifications for external contractors.
  • Solid understanding of Health & Safety legislation and its application in industrial settings.
  • A recognised engineering qualification (City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3) supported by an apprenticeship.

Viridor is at the forefront of waste management and resource recovery in the UK, operating the largest n etwork of Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs). We play a crucial role in supporting the UK's climate goals by diverting waste from landfills and transforming it into valuable energy resources.

We have an opportunity in Exeter for a Mechanical Technician to join our team working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday plus a 1 in 4 callout.

The salary for this role will be £49,129.00 per year , plus participation in an annual bonus scheme, in addition to our great range of benefits.

As a Mechanical Technician, you will play a key role in maximising the long-term reliability and availability of the plant. Working as part of the mechanical maintenance team, you will carry out planned and reactive maintenance activities, helping to protect the value of our assets and support the achievement of operational and financial targets.

What you'll be doing
  • Carrying out planned preventative and reactive mechanical maintenance activities
  • Diagnosing faults and ensuring plant equipment is maintained to a high standard
  • Supporting plant reliability and availability through effective maintenance practices
  • Working safely within Permit to Work and Safe Systems of Work procedures, including plant isolations
  • Contributing to the delivery of maintenance plans and performance targets
  • Assisting in the development of scopes of work and engineering specifications for external contractors where required
  • Promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and site procedures
What we're looking for

We're looking for a practical, safety-focused maintenance professional with experience in a heavy industrial, process or power generation environment.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience carrying out both planned and unplanned maintenance activities
  • A proven track record of delivering maintenance work safely, efficiently and within environmental and operational requirements
  • Knowledge of mechanical repair methods, machinery and equipment used within heavy industrial or process plant environments
  • Experience working within Permit to Work and Safe System of Work processes
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance programmes and Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Some experience creating scopes of work or engineering specifications for externally contracted work
  • A strong understanding of Health & Safety legislation and its practical application within an industrial setting
  • A recognised engineering qualification, such as a City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent), supported by a completed apprenticeship

You'll also demonstrate:

  • Strong communication and report-writing skills
  • A collaborative approach and ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Logical thinking and strong problem-solving abilities
  • The ability to prioritise your workload and work independently when required
  • A proactive attitude and commitment to continuous improvement

While not essential, experience working within an Energy from Waste (EfW) facility, power station, or similar process industry, together with an understanding of EfW operations and plant processes, would be highly desirable .
