Job summary

James Fisher Defence (JFD) is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to drive projects from concept to completion. You will support design, manufacturing, testing and delivery, collaborating with internal teams, clients, suppliers and inspectors to ensure successful outcomes.

The role requires knowledge of mechanical engineering, gas and fluid systems and marine/defence standards, with PLM and documentation responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience taking designs from concept to production.
  • Knowledge of gas and fluid systems.
  • Experience with marine/defence standards (LR, DNV).
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Diving equipment design experience is advantageous.
  • Ability to prepare and manage engineering documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and resolve engineering queries across projects.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Supply Chain, and Production to deliver solutions.
  • Communicate project progress to stakeholders.
  • Source components and create BOMs and part numbers.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation and reports.
  • Identify and manage technical and project risks.
  • Review drawings for standards and quality compliance.
  • Ensure deliverables are on time and within budget.

The Role:

As a Mechanical Project Engineer, you will drive projects from concept to completion, supporting design, manufacturing, testing, and delivery activities. Acting as a central point of contact, you will collaborate with internal teams, clients, suppliers, and inspectors to ensure successful project outcomes.

What you'll be doing:
  • Provide technical support and resolve engineering queries across projects and existing product ranges.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, including Sales, Supply Chain and Production, to deliver effective engineering solutions.
  • Communicate project progress and engineering updates to key stakeholders.
  • Source components and materials and create associated part numbers and bills of materials.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation, including specifications, schedules, procedures, certification and reports.
  • Identify, assess and manage technical and project risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review drawings and documentation to ensure compliance with company standards, regulatory requirements and quality expectations.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are completed on time and within budget, acting as a technical checker and supporting site visits to suppliers, clients and other company locations as required.
What we're looking for:
  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing techniques,
  • Experience taking designs from concept through prototyping, validation and production.
  • Skilled in preparing and managing engineering and project documentation.
  • Knowledge of gas and fluid systems, relevant design standards, and industry guidelines (e.g. IMCA).
  • Experience working to marine or defence standards, including class society rules such as LR and DNV.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems; product design, diving equipment design, or diving qualifications would be advantageous.
  • Early finish on Fridays
