Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to provide site-based support for mechanical and public health building services on major railway stations and related buildings.

You will liaise with the design team, main contractor and subcontractors, supporting buildability, commissioning, testing and on-site surveys to ensure design intent is met.

Qualifications

  • Experience of mechanical building services design in Rail projects.
  • Knowledge of Network Rail, Crossrail, HS2 standards (LUL/TfL useful).
  • Understanding Building Regulations and British Standards for mechanical services.
  • Health and safety regulations (CDM, HSE guidance).
  • Experience with technical submittals, non-conformance notices, and testing/commissioning processes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide site-based support to the design teams for mechanical and public health building services.
  • Liaise between the WSP design team and main contractor and sub-contractors.
  • Attend design, interface and progress meetings; undertake site surveys and visits.
  • Support commissioning and entry into service, review red-line as-built documentation.
  • Assist development of design development notes (DDN) for field changes; review submittals and proposals.

The Stations team within WSP’s Rail business is actively seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to provide site‑based support to our teams delivering mechanical and public health building services designs for major Railway Stations and other Railway Buildings.

The role will principally involve liaison between the WSP design team and the main contractor and their sub‑contractors.

A Little More About Your Role…
  • Knowledge of the Mechanical site installation work; preferably on Rail projects.
  • Understanding the design and specification produced by WSP and our sub‑consultants.
  • Providing advice to the design team on buildability of designs.
  • Providing advice to the design team on commissioning and testing provision within designs.
  • Undertaking non‑intrusive site surveys to gather information for the design team.
  • Facilitating site visits by design team (completion of risk assessment, attendance at main contractor safety briefings etc.)
  • Attendance at internal and external design, interface and progress meetings.
  • Attendance at factory and site acceptance tests.
  • Monitoring progress of the installation works and reporting emerging technical risks to the design team.
  • Producing responses to technical queries.
  • Supporting the review of technical submittals and contractor’s proposals.
  • Providing support to the production of design development notes (DDN) particularly for field changes.
  • Providing support to the main contractor in inspecting the ongoing installation for compliance with the design intent.
  • Providing support to the main contractor in the resolution of site non‑conformances and defects.
  • Providing support to development of BWIC and associated site changes and remedial work.
  • Providing support to the main contractor during commissioning and entry into service.
  • Reviewing red‑line mark‑ups for as‑built documentation.
  • Reviewing operating and maintenance documentation.

  • You will work closely with like‑minded individuals on exciting and challenging projects.
  • Rail Station MEP team consist of more than 70 mechanical, electrical and Public Health Engineers.
  • You will join a team of professionally qualified, diverse, talented individuals who collaborate to:
    • Undertake project work from across the design lifecycle, including early concept stage to detail design
    • Deliver projects for Network Rail, HS2, TfL, Transport for The North, TfGM, Nexus, Local Authorities, Principal Contractors and Private Developers.

Reporting to a senior member of our stations team, you will have the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting and challenging multi‑disciplinary Rail stations projects around.

What We Are Looking For You To Demonstrate…
  • Experience of mechanical building services design and Site design representative in the Rail environment, including heating, cooling, hot and cold water, above ground drainage and ventilation systems.
  • Registration with a UK Engineering Institution
  • Understanding of:
    • the requirements of Network Rail and/or Crossrail and/or HS2 standards (knowledge of LUL/TfL standards would also be useful).
    • the Building Regulations and British standards and industry guidance associated with mechanical building services.
    • health and safety regulations (e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations), Common Safety Method and HSE guidance.
    • typical project administration processes (technical queries, non‑conformance notices, technical submittals etc.).
    • typical testing and commissioning and entry into service processes.project technical lifecycle (RIBA work stages and BSRIA BG6)
