Job summary

PPM Recruitment is seeking an experienced Mechanical Project Manager with a strong gas background to lead delivery of mechanical and gas projects in the UK. You will oversee programme, budgets, procurement, subcontractors, health & safety, quality and client relationships from pre-construction through to handover.

You will coordinate gas installation works, interpret drawings, manage design, testing and commissioning activities, and lead site teams to ensure on-time, on-budget project success.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Mechanical Project Manager in construction, building services, utilities or engineering.
• Significant experience delivering gas and mechanical projects.
• Strong understanding of commercial/industrial gas systems.
• Experience managing projects from pre-construction through to completion.
• Reading and interpreting mechanical, gas and engineering drawings.
• Strong knowledge of project programmes, costs and commercial management.

Responsibilities

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Project Manager with a strong gas background to manage the successful delivery of mechanical and gas projects from pre-construction through to completion and handover. The successful candidate will have proven experience managing mechanical and gas installation projects, with responsibility for programme, commercial performance, procurement, subcontractors, health & safety, quality and client relationships. This is a hands‑on project management role requiring strong technical knowledge of commercial/industrial gas systems, mechanical services, installation, testing and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage mechanical and gas projects from initial planning through to completion and handover.
• Take overall responsibility for project programme, budget, quality and delivery.
• Manage gas installation works, including coordination of pipework, plant, equipment and associated mechanical services.
• Review and interpret drawings, specifications, schematics and technical documentation.
• Coordinate design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning activities.
• Manage mechanical and gas subcontractors, engineers, suppliers and site teams.
• Liaise with clients, consultants, principal contractors, designers and other project stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain detailed project programmes and monitor progress against key milestones.
• Manage project costs, variations, valuations, forecasts and commercial performance.
• Identify project risks and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
• Coordinate procurement of materials, equipment, specialist services and subcontractors.
• Ensure gas and mechanical works comply with applicable legislation, industry standards, project specifications and company procedures.
• Coordinate inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of gas and mechanical systems.
• Ensure appropriate documentation is completed, including test certificates, commissioning records, O&M manuals and as-built information.
• Attend and lead project meetings, providing regular progress updates to clients and senior management.
• Manage project handover, snagging and close-out.
• Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with approved RAMS and site requirements.
• Maintain high standards of health, safety, quality and environmental performance.
• Provide technical support and guidance to site teams where required.

Key Requirements

• Proven experience as a Mechanical Project Manager within the construction, building services, utilities or engineering sector.
• Significant experience delivering gas and mechanical projects.
• Strong understanding of commercial and/or industrial gas systems.
• Experience managing projects from pre-construction through to completion.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical installation, pipework and plant.
• Experience managing subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical, gas and engineering drawings.
• Strong understanding of project programmes, costs and commercial management.
• Excellent client and stakeholder management skills.
• Strong understanding of health & safety requirements.
• Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects or workstreams simultaneously

Qualifications & Certifications

Ideally, you will have:

• HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
• Relevant gas industry qualifications and/or experience.
• SMSTS or equivalent.
• CSCS or relevant site-based qualification.
• Relevant project management qualification such as APM, PRINCE2 or equivalent.
• Experience working under NEC, JCT or similar construction contracts.
• Relevant professional membership such as CIBSE, IMechE or equivalent would be advantageous
