Job summary

King’s College London is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to help keep our central London campuses safe, efficient and well maintained, enabling world‑class research, teaching and student experience. You’ll deliver PM on HVAC, boilers, pumps, AHU/FCU systems and water services, respond to faults, and ensure plant rooms operate reliably while staying compliant with statutory requirements.

The role also involves CAFM documentation, water hygiene management, on‑call duties, and supporting

Qualifications

  • Recognised mechanical qualifications and building services knowledge.
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance in large estates or complex environments.
  • IT literate with CAFM, SharePoint/Teams usage and basic safety reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance on HVAC, boilers, pumps, AHU/FCU, and water systems.
  • Respond promptly to reactive maintenance tasks and diagnose faults.
  • Ensure plant rooms and mechanical infrastructure operate efficiently and safely.
  • Maintain compliance with statutory regulations and record inspections in CAFM.
  • Support water hygiene management and Legionella control procedures.
  • Undertake training and qualify as competent persons as required.
  • Mentor apprentices or junior engineers where appropriate.
  • Be part of the on-call engineering rota with scheduled weeks.

What you’ll be taking ownership of as a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer:
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on a wide range of systems, including HVAC systems, boilers, pumps, ventilation(AHU, FCU, CB) hotandcold-watersystems, and plumbing installations.
  • Respond promptly to reactive maintenance tasks, troubleshooting and resolving faults tomaintainsafe and efficient operation of university buildings.
  • Ensure efficient operation of plant rooms, mechanical infrastructure, and associated systems through routine inspection and servicing.
  • Ensure all maintenance and repair workcomplies withrelevant statutory regulations and industry standards (e.g. pressure systems, water hygiene, gas safety where applicable).
  • Maintainaccuraterecords of maintenance activities, inspections, and statutory compliance checks using the university’s CAFM (Computer-Aided Facilities Management)app.
  • Support water hygiene management, including temperature monitoring and flushing, in line with L8 / Legionella control proceduresas well as carry out water hygiene risk assessment remedials.
  • To undertake training and qualify as Authorised/Responsible/Competent Persons as required.
  • Support apprentices or junior engineers with knowledge-sharing and mentorship whereappropriate.
  • Forming part of thededicated-oncall engineering team with scheduled / rota on call weeks.
What you’ll bring to the team as a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer at King’s College London:
  • Recognised mechanical qualifications (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services / Plumbing & Heating or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems such as HVAC, hot and cold-water systems, pumps, air handling units, FCU and chilled beams supported by strong fault-finding skills
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements and statutory compliance in building maintenance
  • Experience in a mechanical maintenance role, preferably in a large or complex estate environment
  • IT literate – Use of iPad / SharePoint / Emails / MS Teams / CAFM reporting
  • Good knowledge and understanding of building services systems and safe working practices (inclusive of electrical systems)
  • Legionella awareness and water hygiene training (HSG274 / L8)
  • Desirable experience includes working within an educational or public sector environment, alongside steam, pressure systems AP, an understanding of BMS systems and energy efficiency and extra qualifications such as F Gas or a Level 2 in refrigeration or Air Conditioning.

Working hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based on one of Kings College London’s campuses in Central London.
