Mechanical Fitter – Team Leader
Job Purpose:
Working alongside the production manager to:
- Oversee department H&S and quality needs,
- Maintain a clean & tidy working environment – using the 5s philosophy,
- Develop & maintain individuals’ training and skill requirements,
- Lead teams and direct focus towards goals for achieving production deliverables,
- Be a strong communicator and team motivator,
- Represent the mechanical fitting team as an ambassador/voice,
- Demonstrate strong engineering and mechanical skills to resolve manufacturing/production issues,
- Participate in work activities & solve working problems,
- Focus on continuous improvements by creating efficiencies, implementing & completing projects,
- Cover areas/tasks in the absence of the production manager.
Job Summary:
Supervising daily work activities, maintaining a safe working environment, supporting the production manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Department H&S – conduct work area checks at the end of each day – promote good housekeeping.
- Oversee machine build progress.
- Achieve production deliverables ready for electrical fitting and FATs.
- Communicate, lead, and motivate the team.
- Act as an educator, communicate expectations – processes, procedures, quality standards & mentor individuals, e.g., apprentices, new starters.
- Encourage collaboration & teamwork.
- Set high-quality expectations & upskill others.
- Review shelf-life of adhesives, check stock levels of consumables, and request purchases.
- Work strategically with the production manager, updating on successes, issues, concerns & opportunities – verbally or in reports.
- Achieve machine delivery dates.
- Meet budgeted hours.
- Reduce internal quality errors resulting in rework or scrap.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Ideally apprenticeship trained, City & Guilds, ONC, trade qualification, CSE, GCSE, NVQ in English & Math, or equivalent.
- CMI level 2 team leadership diploma or other supervisor training courses.
- Skills & Knowledge in Mechanical Instrument / Special machine building and fitting.
- Understanding and working from technical drawings, using measuring instruments & following SOPs.
- Bench craft skills – marking, drilling, cutting, threading, forming & using various hand tools.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a mechanical manufacturing environment.
- Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and ERP/MRP systems.
- Electro-mechanical experience.
- Forklift counterbalance license preferred.
