Job summary

Howden Turbo UK, part of Chart Industries and Baker Hughes, seeks a skilled Mechanical Fitter in Peterborough. You will join a small, highly skilled manufacturing team assembling, testing and preparing complex rotating equipment, including steam turbines, gas compressors and gearboxes.

Working from engineering drawings, you will fit, align and test components, carry out shaft alignment, assemble gears, and prepare equipment for shipment.

Qualifications

• Time-served Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship or equivalent engineering qualification.
• Experience in mechanical assembly, heavy engineering or manufacturing environments.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Experience using hand tools, air tools and precision measuring equipment.
• Knowledge of rotating machinery and mechanical assembly techniques.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication and organisational skills.
• Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Assemble steam turbines, gas compressors and gearbox systems to engineering drawings and specifications.
• Fit, align and install mechanical components, sub-assemblies and rotating equipment.
• Carry out shaft alignment, assembly of gears and gearboxes, and installation of linkage and control systems.
• Use measuring equipment and precision fitting techniques to achieve required tolerances.
• Support hydrostatic pressure testing and functional testing of completed equipment.
• Identify and resolve build and test issues, working closely with engineering, quality and manufacturing colleagues.
• Liaise with design, stores and other departments to ensure smooth project execution.
• Complete route cards, job documentation and time recording accurately.
• Prepare equipment for shipment, including protection, preservation, labelling and packing activities.
• Maintain a safe, clean and organised working environment and follow all health and safety procedures.
• Contribute ideas for continuous improvement and support colleagues across the manufacturing team when required.
