Mechanical Fitter / Plumber (plus 30% R&R)

Hours: 37.5 per week, with flexible working options considered

Milton Keynes University Hospital is expanding its Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) cardiology and respiratory services. We are recruiting for various roles, from Chief Physiologist to Driver, within the Medicine division and Estates department.

We are seeking a Mechanical Fitter/Plumber to perform maintenance, repairs, and minor improvements, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards. Responsibilities include working on water, ventilation, steam systems, air tube systems, heating and cooling plants, and other mechanical equipment.

The successful candidate must be capable of diagnosing maintenance issues independently, working confidently without supervision at times, and communicating effectively. Collaboration with the Estates Services Manager, Maintenance Manager, Mechanical Supervisor, and Estates Officers is essential.

Main duties of the job
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and minor improvements, including technically intricate and non-routine activities.
  • Calibrate and fault-find on various engineering plant and equipment, such as low-pressure hot water systems, steam plants, air handling units, and sterilizers.
  • Undertake maintenance repairs and minor improvements across the Trust, ensuring safety and compliance.
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance and testing of building services.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical faults.
  • Conduct boiler plant treatment checks.

Job responsibilities
  • Perform planned and reactive maintenance on mechanical and plant systems, diagnosing and repairing faults in accordance with regulations.
  • Work on heating, water, control, electrical, ventilation, boiler, and building management systems.
  • Install, assemble, and erect new systems independently, adhering to standards.
  • Support other trades as needed.
  • Maintain and repair engineering plant and equipment efficiently.
  • Inspect and maintain water systems, maintaining records per Trust policies.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Plan daily work based on issued work orders.
  • Follow health and safety regulations and Trust policies.
  • Complete installation inspections, tests, and reports.
  • Order materials and spare parts as required.
  • Provide technical support and training to staff and patients on clinical equipment.
  • Undertake on-call duties for emergency repairs outside normal hours.
  • Keep electronic records of tasks performed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Knowledge
  • City & Guilds 214 - Part 2 or equivalent in plumbing or advanced craft certificates.
  • BTEC or ONC in Mechanical Engineering.
  • First aid training for electrical shock within the last three years.
Experience
  • Structured training in Mechanical Engineering with relevant site experience.
  • Knowledge of hot water and steam systems.
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Experience with sterilizers and disinfectors.
