The role
As a Mechanical Fitter, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is your chance to be part of something bigger, contributing directly to the maintenance and upkeep of the Royal Navy's fleet. This could see you working on Warships, Submarines or within our factories supporting the delivery these complex engineering projects. This role could see you working on a wide range of fascinating equipment, from fluid pumps and diesel engines to high-pressure air and hydraulic systems. Your day-to-day could involve:

  • Installing and aligning new mechanical equipment, ensuring everything is meticulously positioned and operational
  • Working from engineering drawings and technical specifications – a keen eye for detail is a must!
  • Conducting functional tests and surveys to verify that systems are performing optimally.
  • Troubleshooting any mechanical issues that may arise and ensuring efficient solutions

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

There is an opportunity for Optimised Working Patterns (OWP) within this role. OWP is a temporary variation to your standard terms and condition that commits you to support 7-day working arrangements. For full details of the patterns, pay and durations, this can be found in the OWP 1 and OWP 2 agreements (available from hiring manager).

Primarily, it involves 4-week shift cycles consisting of either day/back shift or day/night shift. An example of the remuneration for these shifts is as follows:


Essential experience of the Mechanical Fitter

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and work instructions
  • Operating various workshop machinery specific to mechanical fitting
  • Experience working in the marine engineering industry, particularly on Royal Navy ships, submarines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, or large commercial ships. We'll also consider relevant experience from other engineering sectors.
  • Demonstrable experience of removing, installing, and overhauling marine mechanical equipment, with a focus on propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, and power generation equipment.
  • Experience working in a marine engineering environment - Desirable

Qualifications for the Mechanical Fitter

  • We're looking for candidates with a good foundation in mechanical engineering. This could include:
  • Completion of a time-served apprenticeship in marine or naval engineering
  • An indentured apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline
  • A Level-3 Modern Apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline
  • A Level-3 Mechanical Engineering qualification
