Job description
Overview

Location: Yorkshire region. We are recruiting Mechanical Fitters to work across the Yorkshire region in our maintenance department within the Wastewater business area. This is a mobile worker role; home location will determine the area you cover. Work type: Permanent. You will work 37 hours per week. Out of hours, weekend work, and bank holidays will be on a structured stand-by rota. Once fully trained you will be assessed for working independently and you will be required to participate in an out-of-hours standby rota (evenings, weekends, and overnight callouts), which will be no more than 1 week in every 4.

What we do: We provide essential water and wastewater services to the Yorkshire region to ensure clean and safe drinking water and effective wastewater treatment. We look after communities, protect the environment, and support the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity 24/7, 365 days a year. This is an exciting time to join Yorkshire Water with new environmental legislation, investment, and evolving customer expectations. Process & Pumping are a key part of meeting these expectations. As a Mechanical Fitter, you will undertake maintenance of Yorkshire Water’s mechanical assets across wastewater treatment and pumping installations, in a mobile maintenance team delivering planned and reactive maintenance. You will respond to emergency calls as part of an on-call rota and drive to improve asset reliability through effective decision making.

Where you fit in

You will work unsupervised in remote geographic locations and be accountable for completing planned and reactive mechanical tasks within agreed timescales, quality, and cost parameters. You will manage and prioritise your own workload and build relationships with operational customers, colleagues, suppliers, and contract partners. You will adhere to the Health and Safety policy, identify hazards, provide mitigations, and report hazards to ensure their removal. You will supervise approved contract partners, providing risk assessments and method statements where a permit to work is required. You will use Toughbook and/or iPad to capture all work activity and ensure status is updated per workflow processes. You will assist in developing and training apprentices and less experienced team members, and identify ways to improve the value and service of the Maintenance Function. You will install and commission new plant and equipment to relevant standards, diagnose and repair faults on systems and plant, proactively identify follow-on work, conduct your own risk assessments, and create method statements when required to safely carry out maintenance activities. You will specify parts and equipment needed for procurement as part of day-to-day duties.

  • Identify and report follow-on work or areas for enhancement.
  • Conduct risk assessments and create method statements when required.
  • Specify parts and equipment for procurement as part of daily duties.

  • Essential: Recognised Mechanical craft/Technician Apprenticeship and either a City & Guilds / ONC / BTEC / NVQ / HNC / HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Eng Tech.
