Job summary

Saab UK, part of Scandinavia's defence group, seeks a Mechanical Fitter for the Saab Seaeye underwater robotics unit in Fareham. You will assemble mechanical and hydraulic components to engineering drawings, including ROV chassis and tether systems, following standard work instructions.

You will join a small multidisciplinary team, apply 6S discipline, and occasionally work at test locations or customer sites to support prototypes and product improvements.

Qualifications

• Read and interpret engineering drawings and work instructions to ensure assemblies meet standards.
• Use a range of hand and workshop tools including drills, files, screwdrivers, spanners and measuring equipment.
• Carry out basic machining operations; milling/turning knowledge is beneficial.
• Undertake basic electrical assembly activities with appropriate training and support.
• Maintain high standards of 6S, housekeeping, tool control and workplace organisation.
• Manage time effectively to minimise downtime and maximise productivity and delivery.
• Maintain competence in relevant IT systems and tools to perform the role.

Responsibilities

• Assemble large Tether Management Systems, ROV chassis and related mechanical parts per drawings and specs.
• Bolt/align heavy sub-assemblies and structural frames; install components; route hydraulic and pneumatic lines.
• Secure wire harnesses, loom wiring and cable routing; fill reservoirs and check for leaks.
• Support R&D activities, prototypes, trials and product improvements as required.
• Work outside the factory at test locations or customer sites when needed.
• Operate effectively both independently and in a small multidisciplinary team.

The Role

This role is part of our Saab Seaeye underwater robotics business unit in Fareham.

As a Mechanical Fitter you will be tasked with the assembling a variety of small and large mechanical assemblies to customer specification.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assemble large Tether Management Systems, ROV chassis and associated mechanical assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications and work instructions.
• Carry out mechanical assembly activities including:
  • Bolting and aligning heavy sub-assemblies and structural frames.
  • Installing mechanical components and hardware.
  • Routing, bending and connecting hydraulic hoses and pneumatic lines.
  • Securing wire harnesses, looming and carrying out basic cable routing.
  • Filling fluid reservoirs, bleeding systems and checking for leaks.
• Support Research & Development activities, prototype builds, trials and product improvement projects as required.
• Be willing and able to work outside the factory environment, including at test locations and customer sites when required.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a small, multidisciplinary team, using initiative and practical judgement to resolve day-to-day challenges.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, General Assembly drawings and work instructions to ensure assemblies are completed correctly and to the required standard.
• Use a range of hand and workshop tools, including drills, files, screwdrivers, spanners, ratchets and measuring equipment.
• Carry out basic machining operations, including milling and turning, where required. Previous machining experience would be beneficial.
• Undertake basic electrical assembly activities, such as earth bonding and continuity testing, with appropriate training and support.
• Maintain high standards of 6S, housekeeping, tool control and workplace organisation.
• Manage time effectively to minimise downtime and maximise productivity, quality and delivery performance.
• Maintain the appropriate level of competence in relevant IT systems and other tools required to perform the role effectively.
