Great Western Hospital, Wiltshire

Full Time – 37.5 hours per week.

Shift patterns vary between 0 & 8 hours for an 8-hour period.
Salary £, - £, depending on experience (review pending). On call generous allowance plus Serco benefits. AP Duty holder payments.

Serco is recruiting for a Mechanical Technician to join the team at Great Western Hospital. This role will ensure safe and efficient maintenance of the mechanical services and equipment within the hospital, as directed by Estates Supervisors and Management.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Carry out reactive repairs, fault finding, servicing, commissioning, and planned maintenance of services, plant, and equipment such as boiler systems, AHU, chiller plant within hospital areas as directed.
  • Provide detailed assessments and risk analyses for significant shutdowns and operations to management.
  • Plan and schedule major interruptions, maintenance activities, coordinate work, and collaborate with contractors.
  • Analyze and diagnose faults in complex, multi-faceted equipment.
  • Perform Planned Preventive Maintenance on a wide range of plant and equipment.
  • Work in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures, regulations, and best practices.
  • Develop and review health & safety systems, work instructions, and practices proactively.
  • Work safely and responsibly, ensuring safety of oneself and others.
  • Train and develop apprentices and trainees as appropriate.
  • Mentor team members.
  • Attend work in compliance with the time and attendance system.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Attend work or work beyond usual hours in exceptional circumstances as directed.
  • Report unrepaired faults, defects, or spare parts requirements to supervisors.
  • Participate in on-site and off-site training.
  • Understand how the technician role influences Serco’s GWH contract and the wider company objectives.
  • Be prepared to undertake authorized person duties, including pressure systems, Legionella, ventilation, and medical gases (training provided).
  • Work shifts covering Monday to Sunday and participate in a shared on-call rota.

Qualifications and Experience Needed:

  • Completion of a recognized mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent training program.
  • Higher education certificate, Level 3 diploma/certificate, or NVQ.
  • Proven experience in a similar environment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical building services.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • BOAS trained, L8 training, membership of technical bodies, HTM medical gas, ventilation, and water hygiene training.
  • Veteran, ex-service, or military personnel preferred.
