The role

As a Mechanical Engineer, you'll join the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant Interface Equipment Team within our Devonport Engineering business. This is an exciting opportunity to work on innovative engineering solutions that support the maintenance, refit and operational readiness of Royal Navy submarines.

Day-to-day, you'll play a key role in the design and development of temporary mechanical equipment that interfaces with submarine reactor plant fluid systems. Working within a highly regulated environment, you'll contribute to projects that have a direct impact on national defence while developing your technical expertise across the full engineering lifecycle. This role offers the chance to solve complex engineering challenges, influence technical decision-making, and build a rewarding career within one of the UK's leading defence and engineering organisations.

  • Producing engineering designs, technical documentation and assessments to support complex engineering projects
  • Developing mechanical engineering solutions throughout the design lifecycle, from concept through to implementation
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to ensure compliance with engineering standards, legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Supporting design reviews, hazard studies and engineering analysis activities
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver high-quality outputs to programme schedules and budgets

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements.

Essential experience of the Mechanical Engineer

  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles, particularly within fluid systems, pressure systems or materials engineering
  • Knowledge of engineering design lifecycles and associated design processes
  • Awareness of engineering legislation, standards and regulatory requirements within a regulated industry
  • Experience producing technical engineering deliverables and supporting engineering design activities
  • Strong problem-solving, communication and organisational skills

Qualifications for the Mechanical Engineer

Essential:

  • HNC or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline

Desirable:

  • Further engineering qualifications or progress towards professional registration
  • Experience with computer-aided design, engineering analysis or fluid systems design

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) / Developed Vetting (DV) / Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) security clearance for this role.
