BAM UK&I are looking for a Mechanical Design engineer to join our team in Hemel Hempstead

Your mission

We are seeking a Mechanical Design/Building Physics engineer to collaborate with our engineering design team and partners to develop our business.
The ideal candidate will possess solid mechanical engineering knowledge, experience in dynamic thermal modelling, and enthusiasm for growth and development.
Structured and unstructured training will be provided to enhance skills in building services engineering and sustainability.

You will report directly to the MEP Technical Director/Associates and coordinate with all design disciplines within BAM Design and other BAM business units.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Conduct feasibility studies
  2. Model building regulations compliance (Part L/EPC)
  3. Perform thermal comfort analysis (CIBSE Guide A, TM52, TM59)
  4. Carry out CIBSE TM54 Operational Energy analysis
  5. Research passive design and low-zero carbon technologies
  6. Support Net-zero operational energy studies for new and retrofit projects
  7. Contribute to planning documents such as energy strategies
  8. Advise clients and architects on energy conservation to minimize environmental impact
  9. Assist in preparing bid presentations and energy-related deliverables
  10. Analyze heating, cooling, ventilation, air conditioning, and BMS solutions
  11. Collaborate with project engineers and multidisciplinary teams
  12. Coordinate with site construction teams
  13. Participate in client and progress meetings, prepare reports
  14. Secure necessary approvals from authorities
  15. Create project specifications as needed
  16. Promote knowledge sharing within project teams
  17. Ensure projects comply with CDM regulations
  18. Mentor junior engineers and support their professional growth
  19. Perform other duties as reasonably required

Typical work activities include:

  1. Undertaking thermal modelling in IES
  2. Designing mechanical services across RIBA/BSRIA stages
  3. Ensuring designs meet health, safety, and environmental standards
  4. Collaborating with electrical, public health, architectural, and structural teams
  5. Preparing presentations and reports for various purposes
  6. Advocating for energy efficiency and sustainability
Who are we looking for?

Education and Qualifications

  • Membership with CIBSE or IMechE is desirable
  • Chartered Engineer or progressing towards accreditation
  • Engaged in professional development
  • Degree qualification preferred

Experience

Proven experience in a similar role.

General Experience:

  • Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Understanding of legislative, health, safety, and sustainability requirements
  • Knowledge of RIBA/BRSIA work stages
