Job summary

Universal Quantum in the United Kingdom is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to help develop hardware for ion-trap quantum computing. You will design, build and test thermal control systems and electronic enclosure assemblies for ion trap devices, and work with a multidisciplinary team to integrate mechanical designs with laser systems and electronics.

The role emphasizes planning, risk management and collaboration across engineers, physicists and quantum specialists.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years in a competitive engineering environment.
  • Experience designing thermal management systems and electronic enclosures.
  • Proficient in 2D & 3D CAD with detailed drawings.
  • Experience with CAE tools for thermal and mechanical FEA.
  • Experience in thermal/mechanical testing.
  • Materials science understanding for vacuum/thermal systems.
  • Experience managing suppliers and contractors.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; team player.
  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

What You’ll Accomplish
  • Design, build and test thermal control systems for ion trap quantum devices.
  • Design, build and test electronic enclosure assemblies for ion trap quantum devices.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with laser systems and electronics designs.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary and experienced team of Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Physicists and Quantum Engineers.
  • Help in the planning and scheduling of projects, reporting progress and issues.
  • Engage with project planning activities, risk management and scheduling requirements.
The 3 Most Critical Attributes We’ll Use to Compare Candidates:
  1. Experience in the design and build of thermal management systems.
  2. Experience in the design and build of electronic enclosure assemblies.
  3. Experience in developing complex models to simulate thermal management systems.
Must-have Skills:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in a competitive engineering environment.
  • Significant experience in the design of mechanical systems including thermal management systems and electronic enclosure assemblies.
  • Proficient in 2D & 3D CAD for mechanical and structural design, including detailed part and assembly drawings.
  • Experience using CAE tools for thermal and mechanical FEA, including stress/strain analysis.
  • Experience in thermal/mechanical testing and methods
  • Understanding of material science and the limitations it imposes on vacuum and thermal systems.
  • Experience of working with and managing suppliers and contractors
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a strong team player.
  • An undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Nice-to-have Skills:
  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques
  • Experience in the design and build of vacuum systems
  • Experience in the design and build of cryogenic systems
  • Experience in vibrational/resonance modelling
  • Experience in optomechanical design
  • Experience in fatigue and creep analysis
  • Experience of using SolidWorks and Ansys
