What you will do

We currently have an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer in our Engineering department at our Hartlepool Site. Within the role, you will:

  • Support the Engineering Manager with the coordination of the area’s engineering activities and implementation of appropriate strategies, to drive continuously improving manufacturing performance and delivery of our Annual Plan
  • Identify, lead and manage processes improvements.
  • Manage & develop a team of four specialist engineers and 24 Mechanical Tradesmen across a broad range of equipment.
  • Advise the wider engineering function with technical guidance and strategies with a total of 84 people employed.
  • Manage on a daily basis the execution of routine maintenance work, including any deviations to work schedules.
  • Have a longer term view on maintenance, reliability performance and replacement of legacy systems & processes.
  • Ensure all improvements in the work execution are clearly communicated and implemented across a multifunctional site team.

You will support and drive the failure analysis processes and ensure that all engineering activities are carried out in line with the standards and strategy for the Works Area (e.g. management of spares, management of contractors, budget management, engineering standards & procedures. etc.).

What you will need

The successful candidate will have previous Mechanical Engineering experience in a high volume industrial manufacturing environment, previous hands on experience would be advantageous. You must be educated to qualified to a minimum of 2.1 BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent recognised by an accredited body. Chartered status an advantage. Applicants will have an appreciation of the techniques, problems and standards associated with steel or related engineering disciplines.

Some of the key attributes we are looking for in applicants include:

  • Ensure that mechanical engineering activities comply with current health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Establish the operational and engineering priorities with line managers to optimise plant production availability.
  • Manage the training and development of staff to provide a safety conscious, multi skilled and technically competent workforce.
  • A knowledge of statistical problem solving utilising standard Failure Reduction & Continuous improvement techniques
  • Ability to project manage improvements with the ability to expand to projects utilising contracted labour.
  • Monitor and control expenditure on spares, materials and labour to achieve budgeted objectives.

Previous exposure to the following, although not essential, is advantageous:

  • Legislative requirements such as (PSSR, PUWER, LOLER, LEV) governance.
  • Overhead Crane Maintenance
  • Permit to work systems and contractor management
