Job summary

Pell Frischmann is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Water & Wastewater team in Croydon. You will develop mechanical designs from concept to construction, delivering sustainable and cost-effective solutions for water treatment, pumping stations, and pipelines.

You will collaborate with civil, process and electrical teams, perform calculations, select equipment, and support projects through tender to commissioning.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Working towards or holding IEng/CEng status with a recognised professional institution.
  • Experience delivering mechanical design solutions in water/wastewater, knowledge of pumping stations, treatment works and pipelines.
  • Experience with calculations, specifications, reports and design documentation; able to work in multidisciplinary design teams.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver mechanical designs for water and wastewater projects.
  • Prepare calculations, specifications, reports and design deliverables.
  • Undertake equipment selection including pumps, screens, valves, pipework, and treatment systems.
  • Support feasibility, outline and detailed design stages.
  • Work with civil, structural, process, electrical and environmental teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews and value engineering.
  • Provide technical support during tender, construction and commissioning phases.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, standards and health & safety.
  • Support development of junior engineers and promote technical excellence across the team.

Mechanical Engineer - Water & Wastewater

About The Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Water & Wastewater team in Croydon, supporting the delivery of a wide range of clean water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will be responsible for developing and delivering mechanical engineering designs from concept through to detailed design and construction support. You will play a key role in designing innovative, sustainable and cost-effective solutions for water treatment works, wastewater treatment works, pumping stations, pipelines and associated infrastructure. The role offers the opportunity to work on major UK water sector frameworks and contribute to projects that have a positive impact on communities and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver mechanical engineering designs for clean water and wastewater projects.
  • Prepare calculations, technical specifications, reports and design deliverables.
  • Undertake equipment selection, including pumps, screens, valves, pipework, sludge handling and treatment systems.
  • Support feasibility studies, outline designs and detailed design stages.
  • Work collaboratively with civil, structural, process, electrical and environmental teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews and value engineering exercises.
  • Provide technical support during tender, construction and commissioning phases.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders throughout project development.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and health and safety requirements.
  • Support the development of junior engineers and contribute to technical excellence across the team.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills

  • Qualifications Degree (BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc) in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. Working towards, or holding, Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised professional institution. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Postgraduate qualification in Mechanical, Water, Wastewater or Environmental Engineering. Membership of a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience Experience delivering mechanical design solutions within the water and wastewater sector. Knowledge of pumping stations, treatment works, process equipment, pipelines and mechanical installations. Experience producing calculations, specifications, technical reports and design documentation. Experience working within multidisciplinary design teams. Experience working on UK water utility frameworks and AMP programmes. Experience supporting projects through design, construction and commissioning phases. Site-based experience and technical leadership or mentoring responsibilities.
  • Skills Strong mechanical engineering design capability. Ability to undertake mechanical calculations, equipment selection and technical assessments. Knowledge of relevant standards, legislation and design best practice. Strong communication, report writing and stakeholder management skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and engineering design software. Experience using AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D or similar design tools. Knowledge of BIM processes, digital delivery and asset management principles. Understanding of whole-life cost assessments, sustainability objectives and carbon reduction initiatives. Project management and commercial awareness skills.
