We are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical and Electrical Technician to join our team across Sewage Treatment Works sites between Reading and Newbury.

As the successful candidate, you will ensure that all equipment at our sewage treatment works is running safely and efficiently using proactive and reactive maintenance methods. You will inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify or repair electrical and mechanical plant and equipment.

Working within the maintenance team you will follow robust planned maintenance, getting involved in minor installation projects, electrical fault finding, and emergency breakdown repairs to ensure our plant operates all year round.

What you’ll be doing as the Mechanical & Electrical Technician

  • Carrying out scheduled planned maintenance work on mechanical and electrical equipment in compliance with company procedures to minimise plant breakdowns.
  • You will investigate plant failures and carry out repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and carrying out repairs during incidents.
  • Examples of equipment that you will be working on will be various pumps and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems such as VSD’s, automatic valves and penstocks, flow, level and pressure measurement, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, chemical handling and dosing equipment.
  • Participate in a standby rota following the relevant training.

Base Location: Reading STW (RG2 0RP), Newbury STW.

Working Pattern: 38 Hours per week, Monday- Friday, 7:30am – 3:36pm plus standby and overtime opportunities increasing earnings upon completion of essential company training.

Company Van, Fuel card (company use only), PPE and all Tools are also provided.

What you should bring to the role

  • To be a time-served apprentice with an NVQ or C&G level 3 in mechanical and electrical qualifications.
  • Experience working on large industrial plant equipment, including various pumps within the utility industry, would be beneficial. It would suit mechanical maintenance/service engineers or mechanics from any industry.
  • 18 TH Edition would be beneficial, but not a requirement, but one must be willing to obtain it during probation.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues are essential.
  • The work will require physical fitness as you will work in manual handling and often in physically demanding roles.
  • Be able to work in restricted areas.
  • A valid driving licence is essential, and all necessary equipment, such as tools, are provided.

  • Be a self-motivated individual who can immerse themselves into the team around them, you need to be very disciplined, have the desire to learn from those around you and have a can-do attitude. This role can be demanding at times but very rewarding too.
  • Take Ownership of responding quickly to faults, being curious to understand the problem fully, and identifying the best solution to resolve it the first time.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the team.
  • Teamwork – We are one team, and our end goals are the same.
  • Proactive – take the lead on recommendations and improvements around the site and communicate effectively.
  • Must be prepared to be trained in safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety standards.
