Job Description:

As part of our new Network Maintenance Contract, we have an ambitious programme of bridge maintenance work, including upgrading or replacing life-expired and sub-standard Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) components on structures such as the Caledonian Canal swing bridges on the A82 and A830 between Inverness and Fort William, and operation/maintenance of the Kessock Bridge mobile inspection gantry. Our current budget for bridge M&E maintenance works is £1-2 million annually.

We are seeking an M&E Engineer with experience in moving structures and/or bridge gantry operation and maintenance to join our team based in Inverness.

The Engineer / Senior Engineer (M&E) will be involved in managing or executing investigations, design, procurement, and construction of various bridge M&E schemes.

Candidates should have experience in designing or maintaining mechanical and hydraulic bridge components, electrical/electronic systems, and knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and commercial aspects.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual interested in career progression, with good team working and communication skills, flexibility, and a valid driving license.

Job Purpose:

  • Assist, complete, or manage investigation, design, planning, procurement, and construction of bridge M&E maintenance and replacement works, working with internal teams, consultants, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities and Activities include:

  • Monitor financial performance of schemes
  • Follow health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures
  • Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and conduct risk assessments
  • Collaborate within NW Major Bridges and other departments
  • Update structural records
  • Design of M&E projects, cost estimation, and record keeping
  • Prepare tender documents and construction plans
  • Evaluate tenders and assist with contract awards
  • Procure, supervise, and measure construction works
  • Ensure compliance with technical standards
  • Undertake environmental screenings and mitigation measures
  • Prepare departures from standards when needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Significant experience in M&E engineering of moving structures or gantries
  • Degree in Mechanical/Systems Engineering or HND with experience
  • Professional qualifications/membership (IEng or equivalent)
  • Valid UK driving license
