Job summary

Heavy Haul Rail is seeking a Mechanical & Electrical Fitter to service and repair locomotives at Mendip VMF and Whatley VMF. You will work to approved maintenance plans, ensuring safety and quality in a 24/7 shift environment.

The role demands practical engineering experience, strong IT/procedural skills, and a proactive approach to changing operational demands to keep fleets in top condition.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to safe working practices
  • Apprentice trained or time served in an engineering environment
  • Experience in electrical and/or mechanical maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of rolling stock would be advantageous
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications and operational systems
  • The ability to work accurately under pressure while maintaining a focus on compliance and safety
  • A Level3 engineering qualification or equivalent

Mechanical & Electrical Fitter

What You’ll Do

A vacancy has arisen for a multi‑skilled fitter to undertake the servicing, maintenance and repair of Locomotives at our Mendip Vehicle Maintenance Facilities (Merehead VMF and Whatley VMF). We currently maintain fleets of Class 59 and Class 66 locomotives at our Mendip sites. The successful applicant will be responsible for helping to achieve team goals and objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to health & safety and local safety policy requirements, and other safety and technical standards
  • Ensure Heavy Haul Rail company engineering standards and procedures are applied and followed.
  • Maintain, service, fault find and repair locomotives in accordance with approved maintenance plans
  • Ensure all relevant paperwork for examinations and repairs is correctly completed to company standards

What We’re Looking For

The successful applicant should be a safety conscious and motivated self‑starter, a fully versatile team member who has well established experience within a railway maintenance depot environment or a similar engineering background. A flexible approach to working hours is essential as Mendip VMF operates a 24/7 shift roster.
