Job summary

Emtec is seeking a Mechanical Design Manager to join our in-house Design & Digital Engineering Team across Scotland and the North of England. You may be stepping up from a Mechanical Engineer role or already operating at design manager level, coordinating internal and external teams to deliver major MEP projects.

The role involves pre-construction design, design workshops, risk reviews and working closely with commercial and delivery teams to ensure timely, compliant design outputs.

Qualifications

• Experience in mechanical design within an MEP contractor or building services environment.
• Ability to review and develop designs and supporting calculations.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate internal and external design teams.
• Review mechanical and MEP design information for compliance and practicality.
• Support bids with design input, costing, and risk reviews.
• Manage external design partners and keep activity on track.
• Prepare consultant appointments in line with guidelines and CDM 2015.
• Lead design workshops with project, commercial and operational teams.
• Review drawings and raise RFIs/TQs as needed.
• Identify design risks and value-engineering opportunities.
• Collaborate with Digital Engineering on construction information.
• Support subcontractor CDP packages and technical submissions.
• Provide technical support during construction and handover.

Job description

Location: Glasgow (Uddingston), Dundee, Edinburgh

Emtec Building Services is looking for a Mechanical Design Manager to join our in-house Design & Digital Engineering Team.

We’re open on level for this one. You could already be working as a Mechanical Design Manager, or you might be an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a strong design background who feels ready to take that next step.

You’ll be supporting the pre-construction design of major MEP projects across Scotland and the North of England, working closely with our teams in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Newcastle, as well as our Off-site Manufacturing facility in Coatbridge.

It’s a really good opportunity to get involved in projects early, take more ownership of the design process and work closely with our wider pre-construction, commercial and delivery teams.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Leading and coordinating internal and external design teams.
• Reviewing mechanical and wider MEP design information to make sure it is technically compliant and practical to deliver.
• Supporting bids and procurement with design information, costing input and risk and opportunity reviews.
• Managing external design partners and keeping design activity on track.
• Preparing consultant appointments in line with BSRIA BG6 and supporting design programmes.
• Making sure design activity meets CDM 2015 requirements.
• Leading design workshops and working closely with project, commercial and operational teams.
• Reviewing drawings and technical information and raising RFIs and TQs where required.
• Identifying design risks, opportunities and value-engineering solutions.
• Working with our Digital Engineering Team on Stage 5 construction information.
• Supporting subcontractor CDP packages and technical submissions.
• Providing technical support to project teams during construction and post-handover.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for someone with a strong background in mechanical building services design who is comfortable working across medium to large MEP projects.

You might already be operating at Design Manager level, or you could be ready to move into a role with more responsibility and coordination.

You’ll ideally bring:

• Experience in mechanical design within an MEP contractor, building services consultancy or similar environment.
• A recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services or a related discipline would be beneficial although not essential.
• Experience reviewing and developing designs and supporting calculations.
• Confidence working with drawings, specifications and technical information.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Good commercial awareness and an understanding of risk and value management.
• A collaborative approach and the confidence to work with different teams and stakeholders.
• An interest in supporting and developing others.
