Job Description Mechanical Design Engineer (Test Rigs) Submarines Full time Derby/Hybrid Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance, and through-life support. As the Mechanical Design Engineer (Test Rigs) your role will involve you working in an exciting area supporting the design of new multi-million-pound test rigs and modifications to existing test rigs, most of which are located in our Centre of Excellence for Engineering Test Laboratory at our main offices at Raynesway in Derby. Due to a growing workload, we're currently looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to undertake test rig design within our Design & Execution team in the Submarines business in Derby. Your role will involve you working in an exciting area supporting the design of new multi-million-pound test rigs and modifications to existing test rigs, most of which are located in our Centre of Excellence for Engineering Test Laboratory at our main offices at Raynesway in Derby. The bulk of the rigs are bespoke hot and pressurised water rigs.

Experience of designing similar process plant facilities, such as oil and gas plant/pipework systems or chemical process facilities as well as designing complex mechanical components and assemblies is desirable. Working in multi-discipline teams, working with internal resource, external design partners and equipment suppliers, you'll work with like-minded mechanical and electrical engineers and our facilities/operations team to be the controlling mind and design intent owner for a range of different size rigs designed to deliver test data related to R&T, Verification and Validation, component qualification and through life performance requirements. It's a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we're all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week. What you will be doing Generating requirements, scoping work, and planning tasks in conjunction with stakeholders.

Applying first principles to mechanical designs as well as standard fluid flow and thermal hydraulic theory to inform and justify design decisions around system and mechanical layout, component selection and sizing, manufacturability and fit form and function. Integrate design and conventional health and safety principles, as well considerations from other disciplines, into credible technical solutions and arguments. Experience ideally in a relevant, heavily regulated industry, such as Aerospace, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Energy, Water or Nuclear.

Experience of specifying, designing, justifying, building and commissioning of complex mechanical & fluid systems. Track record of delivering solutions against specific customer requirements to time, cost and quality. Sound knowledge of engineering principles, process safety, and applicable codes & standards.

Experience in producing detailed component and assembly drawings to a high standard inclusive of GD&T. Experienced in the use of Unigraphics NX & Team centre is highly desirable. Experience of operating complex fluid/chemical or mechanical systems is desirable.

Understand of design process and design and safety assessment processes and tools eg HAZOPs/FMEAs Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or another design engineering discipline.
