Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance, and through-life support.

As the Mechanical Design Engineer (Test Rigs), your role will involve supporting the design of new multi-million-pound test rigs and modifications to existing test rigs, primarily located at our Centre of Excellence for Engineering Test Laboratory at Raynesway in Derby.

Due to increased workload, we are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to focus on test rig design within our Design & Execution team in the Submarines business in Derby.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Generating requirements, scoping work, and planning tasks with stakeholders.
  2. Applying first principles and fluid flow and thermal hydraulic theories to inform design decisions regarding system and mechanical layout, component selection, manufacturability, and functionality.
  3. Integrating health and safety principles, along with considerations from other disciplines, into credible technical solutions.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience in regulated industries such as Aerospace, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Energy, Water, or Nuclear.
  • Proven ability to specify, design, justify, build, and commission complex mechanical & fluid systems.
  • Track record of delivering solutions on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, process safety, and relevant codes & standards.
  • Experience in producing detailed drawings, including GD&T, using Unigraphics NX & Teamcenter is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of design processes, safety assessments, and tools like HAZOPs/FMEAs.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
