Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Commercial Marine business for the key role of Mechanical Design Engineer to deliver and expand our portfolio of marine stabiliser and steering products. From luxury yachts and cruise ships to merchant vessels and naval ships, our products are renowned for in-service quality and reliability.

Reporting to the VP Product, you will undertake detailed design of mechanical systems for marine applications, primarily ship stabilisers and steering systems. This includes all engineering activities from requirements analysis, sales support, specification and design, manufacturing support, testing, to through-life technical support. The work encompasses developing new designs and supporting existing systems.

You may be required to travel occasionally for sea-trials, fault diagnosis, and customer support.

Key Accountabilities

  • Engineering tasks related to the production of original equipment, mainly ship stabilisers and steering gear
  • Performing calculations to meet contract, design, and class society requirements
  • CAD modelling, drawing, and checking
  • Analyzing customer requirements and creating specifications
  • Providing engineering support for sales and estimating
  • Writing technical procedures and product manuals
  • Developing and testing new designs and prototypes

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience
  • Experience designing mechanical components for steel fabrication and assembly
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, welding, machining, casting, and forging techniques
  • Familiarity with classification society rules
  • Experience generating manufacturing drawings for production
  • Proficiency with MRP / ERP systems
  • Skilled in 3D modelling and 2D design (PTC Creo 8 and AutoCAD)
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis (ANSYS Workbench 2019)
  • Working knowledge of Mathcad Prime 8
  • Ability to perform office calculations using various tools and techniques
  • Good computer skills (MS Office, relevant applications)
  • Knowledge of hydraulics and control systems is advantageous
  • Valid EU Passport or current work authorization in the UK
