JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer who can use SOLIDWORKS and has experience designing material handling equipment and machine layouts for manufacturing plants. This includes designing steelwork for Skid Frames, Mechanical Equipment Assess Platforms, Staircases, Equipment Support Structures, and Portal Frame Buildings.

Established in 2012 by Design Engineers, the company is a small business located in Derby, recently acquired by one of the founding members to drive growth. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will join a company providing Design Consultancy services to clients across the UK. They are a professional, innovative, and creative company that values quality work. Their projects are varied and continually changing, offering a range of drawing tasks.

The company designs and details for manufacture and installation bespoke mechanical and structural solutions across various sectors, specializing in industrial plant design, particularly bulk materials handling and processing of powders and liquids.

Most designs are one-offs, operating in a fast-paced industry.

Their work includes designing and producing detailed manufacturing drawings for items like silos, hoppers, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, mills, dryers, coolers, etc., for various clients. They also undertake structural design and steelwork detailing for plant structures, access, and portal frame buildings.

Additionally, they engage in product design and development for clients, ranging from major blue-chip companies to small local fabricators.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer using CAD software, especially SOLIDWORKS, you will primarily design and detail plant layouts, bespoke systems, and equipment from proposal to commissioning. The role includes basic project management. It is a hybrid role, mainly home-based with occasional office and site visits.

DUTIES

Your duties include:

  • Design from concept to detail
  • Producing detailed design documentation: 3D models, 2D sketches, general arrangements, manufacturing drawings, P&ID, schematics, material lists, design calculations for client, manufacture, and installation review
  • Supporting documentation: user manuals, certification dossiers, quality plans, production programs, manufacturing procedures
  • Ensuring quality, safety, reliability, maintainability, and cost efficiency meet client expectations
  • Collaborating with electrical, process control, and other disciplines internally and externally
  • Completing contracts on time, within quality and budget constraints
  • liaising with suppliers to integrate third-party equipment into models

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Commercial awareness and drive
  • Experience in plant layout and materials handling equipment design: Hoppers, Silos, Conveyors, Elevators, Rotary equipment (mills, dryers, coolers, kilns)
  • Steelwork design and detailing: Skid Frames, Access Platforms, Staircases, Support Structures, Portal Frame Buildings
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SOLIDWORKS, Tekla, AutoCAD preferable)
  • Familiarity with MS Office, Outlook, Adobe
  • Team player with excellent communication skills
  • Proactive, analytical problem solver
  • Creative and resourceful
