Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer to join the hardware development team. The team deliver high end, enterprise computer products, built on Graphcore’s own AI focused silicon technology.

Duties include the design of enclosures for printed circuit boards, identification of suitable materials, manufacturing methods, and manufacturing partners; development of 3D CAD models and dimensioned drawings, material tolerance analysis, procurement of prototypes, reliability studies and design for manufacture.


Thermal studies may be needed to ensure optimum performance of the silicon and other system components.

The candidate will work closely with the Marketing team to ensure our products reflect the Graphcore brand, and with the Operations team to ensure the design is easy to manufacture, cost effective, and suitably packaged for transport.

You will collaborate with customers and partners to ensure our products fit easily into their products, and suitable cable control and guidance systems are available.

The Team

The hardware team deliver product solutions for Graphcore’s innovative silicon chips. This includes PCB layout, component selection, circuit design, mechanical enclosures, thermal solutions, lab test fixture design and supplier liaison.

Responsibilities And Duties

  • Product concept and feasibility studies
  • Mechanical design of product in accordance with relevant standards to ensure compatibility in the field.
  • Thermal analysis of cooling solutions
  • Tolerance analysis of complex assemblies
  • Mechanical stress simulation
  • Development of lab fixtures and bring up mechanics
  • Support for manufacturing trials and production processes
  • Detailing product requirements

Candidate Profile

Essential

  • Knowledge of finishing techniques, painting, printing, labelling
  • Knowledge of production processes and capabilities
  • Experience in CAD software, preferably Creo and/or SolidWorks
  • Able to work with complex assemblies
  • Knowledge of thermal principles of electronics cooling
  • Appreciation of manufacturing processes and methods
  • Experience of complex product assembly
  • Team player and a willingness to get involved is a must.
  • Able to brainstorm complex problems and provide creative solutions
  • Attend the office on a regular basis (Hybrid working available)
  • Degree in mechanical engineering
  • Thermal simulation skills
  • Thermal-mechanical simulation and/or experience
  • Basic electrical/electronics knowledge
  • Able to support occasional, international travel
  • EMC grounding & shielding techniques
  • Product compliance & safety requirements
  • Material ROHS/REACH/WEE requirements
  • Practical lab and workshop knowledge
