Job description

Mechanical Design & Analysis Functional Manager

Key Purpose of Job

SSTL is seeking a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to support current and future spacecraft projects. The role involves designing new structures, integrating sub-systems from concept to final design, and supporting mechanical design, systems integration, and build activities.

The engineer will work closely with project managers, system engineers, manufacturing teams, and senior/principal analysts.

Key Tasks

  1. Design components and systems to meet customer requirements using 3D modelling tools.
  2. Complete manufacturing drawings to facilitate procurement and support manufacturing and inspection activities.
  3. Document and implement design changes via Engineering Change Notices.
  4. Write detailed assembly procedures and technical build documentation.
  5. Support integration of mechanical components and assemblies in clean room facilities.
  6. Create and maintain build logs.
  7. Generate Bills of Materials (BoM) and manage/input data into MRP systems.
  8. Support the design of electronics enclosures, generate PCB outlines, and liaise with electrical teams to ensure compatibility.

Other Requirements

  • Flexibility and willingness to support other teams/disciplines such as Propulsion, Mechanisms, and Optical Instruments.
  • Flexibility to support multiple sites occasionally.

Nationality

Eligible to live and work in the UK and obtain security clearance up to SC level.

Qualifications

Experience

Knowledge & Skills
  • Proficient in SolidWorks CAD; familiarity with MRP systems is beneficial.
  • Ability to specify and select materials, surface treatments, and finishes suitable for aerospace applications.
  • Experience in electrical harness design and integration.
  • Understanding of spacecraft systems and manufacturing methods.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook.
  • Awareness of the challenging design environment of space.
  • Good communication skills and ability to produce technical documentation.
  • Hands-on skills in assembly and integration.
  • Ability to deliver solutions under pressure and tight deadlines.
