Overview

The company: One of our clients in Cardiff who is one of Wales' leading Building Services & Sustainability Consultancies, established in 2009. They are based in Cardiff, they specialise in Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health engineering, alongside sustainability consulting. Privately owned they bring over 65 years of combined experience across a wide range of sectors. Their hands‑on approach, delivering projects from small refurbishments to major new builds, has been central to our growth and long‑standing reputation.

Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical design for building services systems—HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and auxiliary services.
  • Produce coherent and compliant 2D and 3D technical drawings using CAD tools (e.g., Revit MEP, AutoCAD).
  • Select and specify mechanical system components that meet performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness targets.
  • Coordinate mechanical systems design with architectural, electrical, structural, and control disciplines.
  • Ensure all designs comply with UK building regulations, industry best practices, and MOD-specific security and performance standards.
  • Review contractors' deliverables; provide technical reviews and sign off on mechanical systems.
  • Contribute to design reviews, site visits, and commissioning to ensure successful implementation.
  • Maintain clear documentation—design calculations, specifications, and change logs.
  • Engage with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders, ensuring smooth communication and project continuity.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (or closely related discipline).
  • Proven experience with mechanical design and design management as either a consultant or a contractor.
  • Experience with heating, cooling, public health systems etc.
  • Strong understanding of UK building regulations, standards (e.g., CIBSE, BS EN), and latest MEP industry practices.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation abilities.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Must be commutable to Cardiff.
Nice-to-Have Attributes
  • Experience with IES, AutoCAD, and Revit MEP.
  • Previous experience managing small design teams or leading projects.
  • Familiarity with sustainable building services design (energy efficiency, green certifications).
  • Awareness of procurement and cost estimation for mechanical systems.
