Mechanical Design Engineer Water Industry
Location: Birmingham (Office–Based)
Job Type: Full–Time, Permanent
Salary: GBP45,000 GBP55,000 (Dependent on Experience)

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a leading contractor in the UK water industry, who are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer at their Birmingham office. This is a permanent, office–based position offering a competitive salary and the chance to work on a wide range of clean and wastewater infrastructure projects.

The Role:
As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be a key part of a multidisciplinary team delivering mechanical design solutions across multiple water and wastewater schemes. This role suits someone who thrives in a technical environment and is confident taking projects from concept through to construction support.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Producing detailed mechanical designs including layouts, calculations, specifications, and equipment schedules.
  • Working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Coordinating with electrical, process, and civil engineers to develop integrated solutions.
  • Providing technical support throughout design development, procurement, and construction phases.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and client requirements (e.g. WIMES).
Requirements:
  • Degree–qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience in mechanical design within the water industry (clean or wastewater).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and 3D modelling software (e.g., SolidWorks, Revit).
  • Familiarity with Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications (WIMES).
  • Excellent communication and problem–solving skills.
Desirable:
  • Chartered or working towards Chartership (IMechE or equivalent).
  • Site experience or understanding of mechanical installation practices.
  • Experience working with UK water utility frameworks.
