Job summary

Rapiscan Systems in Stoke-on-Trent is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to create concepts and detailed designs for large fabricated products. You will develop electro-mechanical assemblies and produce general arrangement drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions.

You will work within the Cargo and Vehicle Inspection engineering team, collaborating across regions to ensure manufacturability and effective documentation throughout the product lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • SolidWorks essential with proven track record in fabrications, sheet metal, and machined components.
  • Experience developing electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience in design for manufacture in production/operations environment.
  • HNC or higher in mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Familiarity with PLM/PDM systems such as Agile.
  • Ability to work with Autodesk Inventor.

Responsibilities

  • Produce designs for engineering structures including fabricated structures and machined components.
  • Produce general arrangement and assembly drawings/instructions.
  • Create bills of materials to support assemblies.
  • Ensure mechanical designs accommodate electrical and other system components.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews and project kick-off meetings.
  • Work with USA division in Billerica, Boston and Indian division in Hyderabad uploading files to PLM system.

Role Overview

Working within the Cargo and Vehicle Inspection section of Rapiscan Systems Engineering team. As part of our team, you will be involved in projects at all stages of the product lifecycle, from initial concept generation, new product introduction and continuous improvement in manufacture. You will be expected to produce design concepts and designs for complex scanning solutions including general assembly drawings, fabricated structures, sheet metalwork, machined components and hydraulic systems.

Responsibilities
  • Be responsible for producing designs of a variety of engineering structures including fabricated structures, sheet metalwork and machined components.
  • Be responsible for producing general arrangement and assembly drawings/instructions as required.
  • Be responsible for producing bills of materials to support assemblies.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that mechanical designs include support for electrical and other system components
  • To work within the engineering design framework including participation in engineering design reviews, new project kick‑off meetings and customer meetings as required.
  • Be responsible for assigned Engineering Change Requests (ECR’s)and Engineering Change Orders (ECO’s) through the document control system.
  • Working directly with our USA division in Billerica, Boston and Indian division in Hyderabad and uploading files into their PLM system.
Qualifications
  • Strong background in the creation of new design concepts for large, fabricated products.
  • Understanding of skills required to develop complex electro‑mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience of design for manufacture, with a background in a production or an operations environment would be beneficial.
  • SolidWorks design experience is essential, with a proven track record in the design of fabrications, sheet metalwork and machined components.
  • The ability to work with other design packages such as Autodesk Inventor would be beneficial.
  • A HNC or higher in mechanical engineering is preferred although equivalent industrial experience will be considered
  • A working knowledge of Engineering calculations and how to apply them in practice
  • A working knowledge of a PLM/PDM software system such as Agile would be beneficial.
